Can you renew if your CHL expired over a year ago?
Hello,
Is there a time limit that you have to renew your CHL after it has expired? I don't know if my search capabilities are lacking but I have not been able to find this. Thanks!

1 year after expiration date.
If you don't renew it within the year, you have to take the class again.
I believe you can find a more detailed answer on the DPS CHL website under the laws/regulations tab.

Much better than the original full day sessions and Frisco Gun Club is having a winter sale for the CHL class.. $50 can't beat that!

Re: Can you renew if your CHL expired over a year ago?
Unless it changed, this is the rule. I forgot to take the class until near my birthday last time and looked it up. Luckily, the renewed license came in fast and I didn't go more than a few weeks without it.JR's 12 Valve wrote:1 year after expiration date.

The same legal changes that eliminated training requirements for renewal also changed when you must renew.
Now, you must apply for renewal BEFORE YOUR CURRENT LICENSE EXPIRES. If you do not apply before expiration, you must go through the process as a new applicant.

Yes, Keith. No less than 4 nor more than 6 hours. testing, paperwork and range qualification does not count towards the hours.

That is not accurate. There is still a 1 year grace period. No carry on an expired license, but can renew up to one year after expiration.

Look at the very first one.

I don't see that in the law. http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/tlodocs/ ... 00048F.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;jbarn wrote:Jumping Frog wrote:The same legal changes that eliminated training requirements for renewal also changed when you must renew.

It looks like the legislature doesn't think so either. http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/BillLook ... &Bill=HB48" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It looks like Jumping Frog is right. The bill requires the license holder to submit the required renewal materials on or before the date the license expires

I know I am right. I remember the discussions on this topic last spring during the legislative session. There were also all the people with recently expired licenses discussing the need to find training and renew before the September 1st effective date.Hector wrote:It looks like Jumping Frog is right.
The DPS is mistaken. Look at the enrolled bill:jbarn wrote:That is not accurate. There is still a 1 year grace period.

Re: Can you renew if your CHL expired over a year ago?
JF is correct about the Bill, but it appears that DPS at least for the short term has taken it upon themselves to allow a grace period. This may be due to the fact that DPS is have trouble meeting their own legally mandated deadlines.Jumping Frog wrote:I know I am right. Maybe they are taking a page from the Obama Playbook and altering legal deadlines to suit their own convenience. After all, Obama doesn't care what the statutorily-mandated deadlines are, so why should any other government agency conform to the lawjmra wrote:... it appears that DPS at least for the short term has taken it upon themselves to allow a grace period. DPS is still honoring the one year grace period. I am sure they have checked with their legal department to make sure their interpretation is correct.
