chl class cost

maybe this was asked before. now that new chl is 4hrs, have prices dropped for the course? less work, less pay, right? so i thought. i looked at the place i went, they havent changed. my wife wants her chl before i send her there, i thought i could hear about others' experience.

Some have dropped their prices but a lot feel that the set up, equipment, etc. is still the same and have kept the same prices.

I'm from the school of you get what you pay for. Interview several instructors, and go with the one you feel will provide the best service. This isn't something I'd try to save a few bucks on. There's lots of great instructors out there in the $75 - $100 range.

I didn't reduce my class cost but I also didn't go through with the modest price increase I was anticipating. As things are I'm about, if not, the cheapest around. I am a value. I give good instruction, get good reviews, and my once a month (or so) classes are full enough, mostly from word of mouth. I do this as a working hobby, have very low overhead, and really want to be at a price point that is affordable to as many people as possible. I have often not "charged enough" for my services in other business ventures. I guess I feel there is a certain "ministry" to it. I'll even let them borrow one of my "loaner" guns to qualify with. Maybe I'm a sucker but I like to think of it as neighborly.

I, too, often buy into the get-what-you-pay-for but I also know how nice it feels to get-more-than-I-expected. I see it partly as advertising. When folks leave saying they really enjoyed the class, learned a lot, and refer a friend or two or three, then I figure they feel good, I feel good, and I get customers without having to "advertise". Besides, word-of-mouth is the best advertising.

I also have seen, and been "victim" of paying too much. Frankly, I have seen a few CHL Instructors that are charging too much, but if they can get it then I hope the student's are satisfied.

I know of one instructor that charges about what I do, several that charge in $100 range, and a couple that charge well over the $100 mark. I have sat in, and taken, a couple of the instructor's classes and refer contacts to them if I can't handle the client's need.

It's like anything else. Do your research, decide what is important to you, and buy what fits your needs...as long as it meets the basic standards of content/function and safety.

I imagine CHL instructors are hurting right about now with the loss of renewal classes. I am surprised they were not fighting against this purely from a business stand point. I have seen some fliers at GT's for CHL classes prior to 09/1 and the instructor was a lot cheaper then others I have seen. I think the key as others has said is find a good class. I was not impressed with the class I took in 07.

I took a cheaper class and most of the class was a sales pitch. Although everyone passed some of the people that went with me are unsure of the laws regarding CHL. This forum has helped me greatly and I was able to sit in another instructor class which made a big difference.

4 hours of instruction is not going to instantly make someone a good or even truly knowledgeable CHL holder, but neither is 10 hours.

I sought out this forum prior to obtaining my CHL and read all the statutes front to back. There was not a single thing covered in the class that I wasn't already well versed in. Those who choose to seek knowledge independently, practice often, and keep abreast of changes to the law are going to be the best CHL holders. You are not going to make a person a good/knowledgeable long term CHL holder in any class.

Case in point. A business associate of mine took the CHL class appx. 2 months ago from a member of this forum who is well respected, and based on their post and other's reviews I believe to be a top rate instructor. This associate is not a knowledge seeker, and I am 100% sure he didn't look at even one of the statutes before the class. Even though he was instructed well, he told me the other day that he has been on the look out for 30.06 signs at bars and hasn't seen one yet, and that most of the bars in Fort Worth must make more on food than money.


That being said, I believe that class cost should and will come down. The business model has changed and I am sure everyone will adjust in time.
