It is hard in retrospect to remember what was the leading motivator, but I think if I am honest with myself, I just thought it would be cool to tell family and friends that I have a CHL. My views have subsequently "matured."

We all would check multiple reasons. I am trying to get the "predominant" reason - the main driving force.

For me, mostly realizing I have three small kids and that leaves us very, very few options if anything happens. In a parking lot, I can't run to the car and lock myself in or run back into a store (I can run, but I'm not running faster than my children). If home invaders come in the back door, I can't immediately run out the front. I couldn't even plan to hurry to a secure hiding place and remain quiet until the threat left because how do you tell a toddler her life may depend on being absolutely silent? Even assuming I could get all three kids rounded up and hidden before encountering someone, and assuming there was a hiding place for four people. A gun won't necessarily solve all of my problems, but it opens up the possibilities a little.

A close second is just a matter of exercising my rights. It feels good. ;)

I got my CHL to protect me & my Family as be my own first responder. The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a Good Guy with a gun!
Also I like responsably carrying a gun.
PS: Don't be a Victim!!!

You never really need a gun until you need it really badly. Better to be prepared for the worst scenario even if it never happens.

As I stated in another thread the main driving force for me was the ability to carry a firearm while bow hunting. Without a CHL I could not be armed.

THE #1 best reason in the world, especially when you factor in defending yourself so you're around to make sure he's take good care of.

I got mine to further reduce the chance of being arrested for carrying a handgun.

I'm an "other". We carried a shotgun in our RV but after a couple of bad locations, I decided that a shotgun in that kind of tight quarters was just not going to work well. To carry a pistol while RVing, the CHL was necessary. There are lots of RVers who take the "my house, my rules" approach. I wasn't willing to take that risk.

Since then, I completely changed. I would have gone the "safety in general" route if not for the RV origin.
