Question regarding psychiatrc history

#1

Post by Cat D8H »

Hi all. New to this forum. I have a question for the instructors and any other person who may have first hand knowledge of this situation. My wife and I took the CHL class last week. She and I both completed the class and passed. I have already completed my app, but she has not. Now, to the point. About a year and two months ago, my wife was prescribed two prescription drugs for back pain she had from a car wreck several years before. One was a pain killer and the other a relaxer, so she could sleep at nigh. Well, she had a psychotic reaction to the drugs, and had to be hospitalized (psychiatric ward) for a week. Once the issue subsided, she was released and advised to take an antipsychotic medication for three months just to be safe. She went into the hospital willingly, and was diagnosed with a "drug induced psychosis". The doctor in charge of her case said that she would make a full recovery and it would most likely never occur again, as it was drug induced. It has been over a year now, and she is back to normal, and not on any medication. Will this incident hinder he ability to get her CHL? And if not, does she have to wait a full two years to get her chl. She is not suffering from a mental illness, and is of sound mind. Anyone with any experience in this type of situation? What should she do? Wait, or send her application in?

Welcome to the forum.

Because your wife's condition was cause by a reaction to the prescribed medication, she would more than likely fall into this category
GC §411.172. ELIGIBILITY
(f) Notwithstanding Subsection (d), a person who has previously been diagnosed as suffering from a psychiatric disorder or condition described by Subsection (d) or listed in Subsection (e) is not because of that disorder or condition incapable of exercising sound judgment with respect to the proper use and storage of a handgun if the person provides the department with a certificate from a licensed physician whose primary practice is in the field of psychiatry stating that the psychiatric disorder or condition is in remission and is not reasonably likely to develop at a future time.
I would suggest she get a certificate from the psychiatrist that treated her and include that with the dates and the application with an explanation that it was a unexpected reaction to the prescribed medication.

Don't tell the doc it's for a chl just in case ur doc is a libtard anti constitution Gun grabber. Tell doc it''s for government clearancefor something u can't disclose.

On the SF86 it also asks about psychiatric history.... don't try to spoof the doctor. She essentially had an allergic reaction to the medication. It wasn't an imbalance in her brain (axis 1) or some kind of personality disorder (axis 2). Really it sounds like all you need is a Dr's note and the warning label that goes with the medication listing the side effects.

I'm going o take a wild guess that one of the medications was Ambian.

"Nervous system side effects most frequently have included visual disturbances, ataxia, and dizziness. Headache, drugged feeling, confusion, anterograde amnesia, excessive sedation, lightheadedness, delirium, nightmares, hallucinations, nervousness, and agitation have also been reported."

The pain killer, I'm guessing Norco.
"Nervous system side effects of hydrocodone include mental depression, dizziness, lightheadedness, respiratory depression (which is sometimes fatal), stupor, delirium, somnolence, agitation, and dysphoria."

The information listed above seems to suggest that like the two shouldn't have been mixed. I'm glad that she is ok and didn't have any kind of fatal reaction.
