Does the instructor need your SSN?

Sorry if this is elsewhere...

Does the CHL class instructor need your social security number? I honestly can't remember from my class, but my wife's instructor claims he needs it. I thought you just had to fill it out on the application with the state.

Mine didn't. If he were to ask he wouldn't get it.

I think some ask for a SSN for their own records - so they can keep a better record of who's been in their classes. When I took my renewal last month, I had to sign a lengthy waiver stating that I was responsible for knowing the law, etc. and agreed not to sue the instructor. The waiver didn't ask for a SSN, but I wouldn't be surprised if some do. In any case, they're not required by law to collect your SSN, but they can make it a requirement of their class - just like they require you to wear eye protection on the range. If you refuse to give it, they have the right to not teach you, and you have the right to take your business elsewhere.

There is absolutely NO reason for a CHL instructor to request your SS number, and there is no way I would supply it.

Name and driver's license number are all that are required for the CHL-100 and the instructor's records.

I would be very concerned about why the instructor would request the SS number, and what he (or she) was going to do with it.

I agree, absolutely no reason for an instructor to ask for SSN!

I use the DPS provided score sheets for the range qualification. The form asks for social security number. I ask my students to NOT provide data for that line.

DPS has not provided score sheets for range qualification in at least 10 years. It is PASS/FAIL only.

:iagree: Plus, I would turn around and ask for his SSN because "I need it for the 1099."

Crossfire and her crew were my last class instructors and they didn't ask for it and I got my license renewed just fine.
