Please help...I took my CHL class yesterday and did the required 10-12 hour course. I then get an email from a buddy who says a guy is going to come to his house and do a class for them in 2-4 hours. He swears the class in a legit CHL course and that the guy is "retired military and former police officer". Is this a legal class? I told him to be careful, but everything I have learned in class and online is that 10-12 hours is required. Please advise.

Your friend needs to report this guy. there is no way that you can cover all the material AND have range fun in that amount of time. Oh, and it's illegal.

It could be legal. It could be a legal FLORIDA class. But not a Texas CHL class.

My mistake. The way the OP said it, I assumed it was a TXCHL course. My appologies :)

If he is getting a Texas CHL, then no it is not a legitimate and needs to be reported to DPS.

However, I will bet the instructor is doing a class for a CHL form another state that may be recognized by Texas, but may have some restrictions on where he can carry (locations and states) due to being a non-resident license.

Try to find out if that is the case and report back here what the state is and we can tell you if it is legit on the training time and requirements by that state.

There are dirty Texas instructors selling certificates without giving the required training. It could also be a class for a different state.

It is a fact. One got caught a couple of months ago and made the news. A search on the forum should turn it up.

And to any and all that are going to take any class to get a Florida license just to bypass the Texas requirements. I did the very same thing. The advertisement looked so appealing. No shoot, 4 hours only class. I have known about Texas CHL being available since it became reality in 1995. I was not actually eligible until 2000. I kept putting it off for the next 12 years. And finally I saw the ad in the paper for the Florida license. I thought, hey, why not? It's just too easy. So, I went and took the class and a month later I had the Florida license. After I got it, I got to thinking that this just doesn't feel right. What if I get pulled over by the law and display a Texas driver license and a Florida handgun license? That might raise some eyebrows. Long story short, I took the Texas class the very next month and got the Texas license a short time later.

So the lesson learned here was, if you get the Florida license so you can bypass the long and strict Texas requirements, you won't feel good about it in the long run. At least that is the way it worked for me.

And you're not exempt from the school zone thing. To be able to keep it in your vehicle on school property when picking up your kid your license must be from Texas in this case.

Yep!

It's the same theoretical danger as anyone using MPA to carry in their car.
