I will be attending a family function at a community park. Just read there rules and one of them says "Fire Arms are strictly prohibited on park property". Do not know if the park has a 30.06 sign posted. Been to plenty of state parks but not yet a city/community park. Do I leave my carry at home? Appreciate any advise/info.

City owned parks cannot be off-limits as the state does not allow 'preemption' of state laws concerning CHL. The only out is if the park is on Corps of Engineer's property next to a Corps lake (i.e. Corps owns property, but city manages it.)

If it is strictly city owned, then their restriction does not apply to CHL holders.

Keith is correct. Also, if the park is privately owned by an HOA or some other private entity or person, then they can exclude armed CHL's only by complying with TPC §30.06 verbal notice or a sign.

Keith and Chas have it right on! The only thing I will add because I work out in a city park several times a week is that many city parks have no knife laws. I checked into it and sure enough I can conceal a firearm even though it has the gun buster sign posted but carrying a knife is illegal. Just thought I would mention that. Since many people never think twice about carrying a pocket knife.

Edit: Not all city parks are like this but the park I go to in Houston is, so check your park. I asked a police officer about it and he said the law was created because many of the homeless guys in the city parks carried knives since most can't afford guns. The gun buster signs are really so silly anyways. It doesn't matter if it is a park or not. If you don't have a CHL it is illegal to walk down your neighborhood block with a handgun let alone a city park. It is just one more charge to throw at you if they catch you in a crime and don't have a chl.

It's not generally illegal to carry a shotgun or AK in public.

Texas State Parks are not off limits to CHLs unless they are owned by the US Army Corps of Engineers

Brazos Bend State Park, approximately 28 miles southwest of Houston, covers roughly 5,000 acres, with an eastern boundary of 3.2 miles fronting on the Brazos River on the southeast border of Fort Bend County. This was the area of Texas' first Anglo colonization. It was purchased by the state in 1976-77 and was opened to the public in 1984.

US Army Corps of Engineers does not own it, the State of Texas owns it, and it's a State Park ... carry away.

If you don't have a CHL it is illegal to walk down your neighborhood block with a handgun let alone a city park.

Also, though it is not illegal to walk down the street with a long gun you are more then likely going to get a visit from law enforcement if you are not part of some type of organized march or don't have a city permit. At least where I live in the highly populated suburbs!

Like I said it doesn’t mean you can’t do it but someone will probably call the police if you are walking in a city park or in a neighborhood.

That would make it trespassing to bring a shotgun to the park. With the upgrade for armed trespassing.
