I'm coming up on my first renewal and have a question. When the permit is renewed, is the new duration five years from the previous expiration or five years from the point where renewal was approved? If the later there'd be an incentive to wait until the last moment to renew...it doesnt make sense to me to have that be the case but government policy and sense dont often go together...

Your renewal will be from your birthday where the current permit expires until your birthday 5 years form that renewal. Once you get your renewal letter from DPS, then I suggest you get your class taken and send in your application for renewal as soon as you can to make sure you don't expire on your old CHL before getting your new card.

I wasn't aware that DPS sends out a renewal letter. I'm up for my first renewal this winter and had been contemplating when to do the renewal class. Now I know to just wait until I get a letter.

That presumes you've been a good boy regarding updating your CHL for any change of addresses.

Renewal CHL100 is good for 6 months--but don't send any info to DPS about renewal until you receive the renewal notice(as in it expires this winter, but I'll go ahead & do it during the summer while I have time) You can go ahead & take the class(as long as it is less than 6 months before expiration) and then wait till you get the notice to send it

I have had students who did not notice a renewal letter (not sent, thrown out with the junk mail, stolen by anti-gun spouse, ...). I always advise to take the class six months before expiration, then log into the DPS site to see if they can renew. If the renewal application is not yet available, check back next month. The one potential issue is that the class has to be taken within six months of the application, so if they (for some reason) do not apply within six months, the class will have to be retaken.
