Just Renewed - Old License?
Hi Folks,
I just finished my first renewal and have new plastic in hand. Do I have to mail my old license in to the state? Can I just destroy it? I just want to make sure I adhere to the rules/regulations for proper disposal...
Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Just Renewed - Old License?
The way I remember it from class is....
If the old license is still valid (hasn't expired.. as would be the case if you had a change of address), then you need to send the old license back to DPS. But, if the old license is expired (renewal) or very close to expired, you can keep it or destroy it.
I'm sure an instructor will be around in a minute to correct me..

Just curious...how long did it take from the time you sent in your CHL-100 until the plastic showed up in the mail?
Re: Just Renewed - Old License?
No change of address, but I do have about 30 days left before the old one expires.
It took exactly 25 days from when they received my package to get plastic in-hand. Probably would have been 24 days (Presidents Day - no mail)

Only "modified" licenses need to be returned. "Modified" means the type of license (SA/NSA) has been changed. Expired (or expiring) licenses or ones with name/address changes can be shredded.
Range Rule: "The front gate lock is not an acceptable target."
Never Forget.

Thanks for the help. Appreciate it.

That's correct. I moved to a new address a couple of years ago and received the new CHL with the instruction to destroy the old one myself (the old one still had 3 yrs left).sjfcontrol wrote:Only "modified" licenses need to be returned. Make sure you get around to it as well.
I put it the old one on a dresser with the intent to shred it. Got busy, forgot about it...a week later I see my wife is using it as a bookmark.
I took it back from her and took care of it.

I guess an expired CHL is still good for something.74novaman wrote:I put it the old one on a dresser with the intent to shred it. Got busy, forgot about it...a week later I see my wife is using it as a bookmark.![]()

Re: Just Renewed - Old License?
I have one that expired in 2001.
I'm going to get around to renewing it eventually.
