Mistaken Identity

#1

Post by stripesace »

Went to Home Depot yesterday while working to pick up a can of spray paint. As I was checking out the guy said he'd need to see my ID. So I opened my wallet, and pulled out my ID and handed him my CHL. He jokingly asks me if this a subtle of way of trying to communicate to him. As soon as he started speaking my stomach instantly churned. I keep my CHL right behind my DL and with my front pocket wallet, when I opened the top with my thumb it grabbed my DL only revealing my CHL, which looks so much a like at first glance. Personally I was so aggravated that they're checking my ID for spray paint, I didn't even notice the wrong color at the top of the ID.

He played it off and told me he's done it himself a few times. I felt like an idiot and now am shopping for a better front pocket wallet solution.

The irony behind all of this is I wasn't even carrying due to where we were working.

Feeling groggy and guilty for showing or having a card that expresses your constitutional right? That won't happen to me. Be proud.

I keep my CHL's in a tyvex sleeve in a different part of my wallet. In the last 7 years, I've never had to show them to anyone.

I still have a vertical ID card (it's good until I'm 25), so when I was in New Mexico, I had to show my TX CHL to buy alcohol. It turns out most places in NM have a policy of requiring horizontal IDs. I don't particularly mind showing a cashier my CHL, it makes their day that much more interesting.

I use mine often as a second ID at the bank. Never had anything less than a happy grin.....they are always happy to see me come in.
Due mostly to appearance, I wouldn't want to trust my life to the poorly paid and under trained security guard posted near the door.
