campus carry question/concern

#1

Post by whitewolfz30 »

I came across a story the other day about the VA Tech shooting a few years ago and how pro-gun people are using things like that (and other cases) to lobby the right to carry on campus. But it got me to thinking...according to a study I read, there are 23 states that allow it, or more precisely, leave it up to the school to decide if it is allowed. Since it is no big secret that colleges are for the most part liberal/progressive in their ideals, I was wondering what may happen if Texas passes campus carry. Will Texas actually "make" the schools allow it? Becasue if the state leaves it up to the schools, I think it's a safe bet how that will work out. I can see something happening where a student is somehow discovered possessing a weapon, and since Texas says it's okay, then there are no criminal charges. However, the school policy is "no weapons" (how most are currently), and so the school takes administrative action against the student. Just curious about your thoughts on this. Also, does anyone actually have the info, or a link to it, that shows exactly what the TX legislature is trying to pass?

This matters to me on a personal note becasue my wife attends a TX university at night working on her Masters. She has a CHL, but I still worry. Night time on a campus can be lonely and a little scary. I would like to know she could carry and have no worry of recourse. To be honest, I don't know if she is allowed to have it in her car in the parking lot right now becasue the student handbook says "no weapons" on the premises. I can't get a straight answer when I question them about what THEY consider the premises...I know what TX says it is...the building.

there are lots of possibilities, and we can all speculate, but until the law is passed allowing concealed carry on campus, we will not know what provisions they put in place for various entities to make it against "policy" and discipline students or faculty or staff if caught with them.

Personally, I feel if it is a public university, or takes any public funds what-so-ever, they should not be able to ban or penalize for it.

Actually the default in Texas is no carry in college/school buildings (and a few other school related places dependant upon the law), a college/school could allow concealed carry by license holders in the buildings if they chose to. So currently we do have some campus carry, and the school could allow complete carry but I don't know of any colleges doing so.

The possibilities are endless. The law that Lucio, Gallegos, Straus, et al killed this year had no opt out. Another possibility is to remove schools from 46.035 (or define schools as K-12 for that section) which would remove universities as prohibited places, but one operated as a private business could give notice with 30.06 signs, like any other private business.

The first step is ousting Lucio, Gallegos, Straus, and others who helped rapists, robbers and other reprobates by disarming victims.

This.

Straus needs to be first on that list and not just for campus carry.
