Michigan to Texas - CHL Question

Our office has hired a new Engineer and recently moved here from Michigan. He had just applied for and received his CHL in Michigan prior to moving here to set up Residence in Texas.
1) Once he changes his D.L. address to his Texas address, thus his Michigan CHL, will his CHL still be valid?
2) What will he need to do to legally carry concealed in Texas? ( will he need to apply for a Texas CHL )
3) Can he not keep his Michigan CHL till it expires?
Just looking for a little direction to pass on to him.
Thanks for any responses!

The newcomer's Michigan license is valid in Texas from the day he arrived as long as he retains his Michigan driver license:
http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administra ... nrecip.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
As has been discussed many times in this forum, the law is murky on what happens during a transition. A new resident of Texas has 90 days to get a Texas driver license and change vehicle registrations (if he brought out-of-state vehicles—having done this, I can say it's a huge, expensive hassle with a bunch of catch-22s).
Probably if he has to display ID for an officer, his Michigan license will be honored. I can't swear that it would be, but no significant problems have been reported in the area of immigrants to Texas with out-of-state licenses. Plus, most police encounters take place while driving, when MPA applies.
Probably he should apply for his Texas CHL as soon as he can demonstrate residency through a lease or agreement to buy real estate. He will have to apply and take the full course (unless he has one of the few exceptions like military handgun qualification).
Please invite him to join this forum or at least lurk. There are some peculiarities in Texas law. In particular, IIRC, Michigan allows a certain degree of open carry, which Texas does not. Also Michigan totally bans possession of firearms on college campuses, which Texas does not—only inside buildings.

Thanks for the info...I found that pdf as well. I just spoke with the local CHL instructor and he advised me that if when he sets up residency here in Texas and changes his D.L., he will need to apply for a Texas CHL if he wants to carry concealed. His Michigan CPL will no longer be valid.

I don't know exactly what Michigan does when a former Michigan resident gets a driver license in another state. That information is communicated between the states. I doubt they can suck his Michigan CPL out of his wallet from 1300 miles away.
Anyway, with current Texas CHL turnaround times, he should have no trouble getting his in-state license within a month. They are running less than 5 weeks for most applicants, and sometimes it seems like they print the license when they receive the application. You can see this in
The Waiting Room.

The best answer is to take the class when you're in Texas interviewing or looking for a new home. Get the application going as a non-resident. With current processing times, you could get your card before you move. Then it's as simple as changing the address on your concealed handgun license when you move to Texas and get a Texas drivers license.

Then he's no longer a Michigan resident. He can carry in his car with MPA and in his home. His choices if he wants to carry other places are (a) wait until he has a Texas CHL or (b) use a valid nonresident license that Texas honors or (c) break the law. I think it violates forum rules to suggest option c.

Does Michigan have a nonresident CHL?

I am always suspicious of local instructors purporting to know the state law of other states.
Whether or not his Michigan license is still valid is up to the State of Michigan. If Michigan says it is valid, then Texas recognizes it.
I still have my previous state license, and it is still valid. I took the time to get a Texas CHL, but I could have carried here under reciprocity until my other license expired.

I know this thread is older. My question is going the other way. My daughter has a Texas CHL and is moving to Michigan. I don't expect you all to know Michigan law, but when she moves to MI, she will no longer be a Texas "resident". Would her Texas CHL be automatically null and void or can we convert it to "non-resident"?
Michigan does honor the Texas CHL and obviously we have people in Texas that get non-resident licenses from other states.
I do have a question into a Michigan group for some other clarification points, but thought I'd throw it out to you guys too.
Thanks

You can convert a Texas CHL to non-resident with an address in another state. Whether it would be valid in Michigan after that is beyond my meager knowledge.
Many states do not allow a resident of the state to use a non-resident license from another state.

When she becomes a Michigan resident, she can send $25 to the Texas DPS and change to a Texas non-resident license with her Michigan address. However, Michigan does not honor non-resident licenses from other states. See
http://handgunlaw.us/states/michigan.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Her license woudl still be valid for carry in states that honor a non-resident Texas CHL, but not Michigan.

While it has been many years since I had to do a State to State transfer, I believe that truer words were never spoken. In addition to the registration change, there is a need to get the vehicles inspected quickly and one of mine flunked, compounding my problems. I added the complication of bringing a sailboat with me that had a hull number issue, though I didn't know that until I tried to get it a registration sticker. TPW ended up being my biggest nightmare of the lot.
If everything works perfectly, it looks like there is an exposure of a 30 day window with nothing but MPA carry. Someone would have to be super organized and diligent to be able to work a Texas CHL license process into the mix during a move. Typically, the place of employment can require an excessive amount of time during a job transfer. Mine always were because I was trying to learn a new job while playing fruit basket upset with the rest of my life. I don't miss having to go through that. A root canal looks great as an alternative.

Thought I pass along the following information I received from Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Owners:
Michigan will recognize her Texas CHL for 6 months here. After that time or by the time she registers to vote here or obtains a Michigan's driver's license, she'll have to go through a class in Michigan and apply for her Michigan CPL. Note that it can take up to 6 months to get a CPL in Michigan depending on which county she is moving to. We suggest she take the class and apply as soon as she moves here in order to keep continuity of her license from Texas. Michigan won't accept Texas training because a large part of our pistol safety training is based on Michigan law.
