CHL Class in an Anti-CHL Facility???
"No Concealed Weapons Permitted..." sign at the door to the classroom in which my wife took her CHL this past weekend. Not even a valid 30.06 sign, but really???????

I read that sign to say that the business does not do the permitting for concealed weapons...not that your concealed handgun is unwelcome!
Re: CHL Class in an Anti-CHL Facility???
I was told at the door if carrying to please leave it in the car (had obtained permission to sit through the class with my wife). I like your answer better!

Once they told you this the sign was immaterial; They gave you verbal notice not to carry. And at that point, I would have walked out and demanded a refund.mjoplin wrote:I was told at the door if carrying to please leave it in the car (had obtained permission to sit through the class with my wife). Interestingly, it would appear to only apply to those renewing CHL licenses. (edit: or those auditing the class.) New students wouldn't have their CHL to carry under.

How did that person know to tell you? Did you reveal that you were carrying concealed? Did you ask about their sign? Or, did you do the smart thing and not say anything to anybody, since the sign didn't lawfully apply to you?mjoplin wrote:I was told at the door if carrying to please leave it in the car (had obtained permission to sit through the class with my wife). BTW, who is this instructor, so that the rest of us may know to avoid him in the future? If you are in the DFW area, I can highly recommend Crossfire-Training who teaches classes at Cabela's in Fort Worth. They welcome CHL holders.

This ^^^^^ plus I would have enthusiastically invited all other class participants to do the same, would have gladly spent the wasted day encouraging others to walk away from that facility and instructor.RottenApple wrote:Once they told you this the sign was immaterial; They gave you verbal notice not to carry. Re: CHL Class in an Anti-CHL Facility???
I know the facility I got my CHL class did not allow any loaded firearms in it. They specifically asked that no one bring in any ammunition or a loaded firearm. I thought it was a requirement because it was an NRA training classroom. Not sure, but that is what I gathered from talking to them.

The place I took my CHL class did not allow firearms.... then again I took my at Texas Tech so the whole being in a school thing might have been why.

Re: CHL Class in an Anti-CHL Facility???
Was it 30.06 or otherwise prohibited by law (such as a school)? If not, then unless they verbally tell you or hand you a card/piece of paper with the 30.06 wording on it, their policies mean nothing. More than likely they were referring to CHL students having loaded firearms with them. That's not all that uncommon. I took my CHL class with Daniel (HotLeadSolutions on the forum) and his classroom is at Bass Pro Shop in Garland. BPS doesn't allow loaded firearms but they aren't 30.06 posted. So if you aren't a CHL you need to unload your firearm when going in. BPS will allow you to unload right there at the counter and will secure your firearm with a trigger lock. But if you have a CHL, carry away!scgstuff wrote:I know the facility I got my CHL class did not allow any loaded firearms in it. There, I fixed it for youRottenApple wrote:Was it 30.06 or otherwise prohibited by law (such as a school)? If not, then unless they ORALLY tell you or hand you a card/piece of paper with the 30.06 wording on it, their policies mean nothing.
I agree this is a likely scenario - but then why the "no CONCEALED handguns" sign? Why just say "no loaded firearms in class" on the sign?RottenApple wrote:More than likely they were referring to CHL students having loaded firearms with them. That's not all that uncommon. What I tell my classes is NO AMMUNITION and NO loaded guns in the classroom UNLESS you already have a valid CHL (either you're a renewal, you have a valid CHL from another state recognized by Texas, and/or you're just sitting in class with a spouse or whatever). Then - if you DO have a valid CHL - you must keep all loaded guns concealed on your person at all times. Pull it out of your holster or even expose it for any reason other than a justified use of deadly force and you will be leaving my class.
I use toy guns and "blue guns" and ASP training guns etc for portions of the class. But I also use a few real guns with inert yellow plastic barrels and/or real barrels with inert orange plastic dummy "ammo". This is one big reason why I want all real ammunition outside the classroom - don't want someone fumbling around and inserting a live round into their gun or one of mine during class.
But I do make it clear that I am not prohibiting valid CHL as long as they keep it concealed.

If they asked in writing it has to have 30.06 wording but if they asked by voice it doesn't.Was it 30.06 or otherwise prohibited by law (such as a school)? Re: CHL Class in an Anti-CHL Facility???
I have no problem with students bringing guns or ammo into my classroom, as long as they are not handled during the class. Many people don't like leaving them in their cars. After all, even DPS had parking lot problems before moving their classes to Georgetown. If they stay holstered or cased, they are welcome.
