I am currently stationed at Fort riley and would like to get my ccl; I only need the class room part from what I understand “I can use my army qual". I have done this type of ccl class here in Kansas but the state of Kansas wont allow me to get it unless I get a DL here, and that would mean I would have to give up my Texas residents. :banghead:

There are instructors who break the law, but to get the training certificate for the Texas CHL, the law requires students receive 10-15 hours of instruction and it must take place entirely within the state of Texas.

For what it's worth, getting another state's drivers license does not change your legal residence. If you're in the military, your home of record establishes residence.

Texas DPS requires all CHL classes to be taught in person, in Texas. There currently is no online option, and no exception to the class for military.

Which makes complete sense. Military rules of engagement are completely different from civilian life. In addition, I don't recall receiving military training on transactional analysis (P-A-C) or other nonviolent dispute resolution theory, nor on gun safety for kids.

The required training for the Texas CHL has four categories, and only one of those involves marksmanship.
The handgun proficiency course must include at least 10 hours and not more than 15 hours of instruction on:
(1) the laws that relate to weapons and to the use of deadly force;
(2) handgun use, proficiency, and safety;
(3) nonviolent dispute resolution; and
(4) proper storage practices for handguns with an emphasis on storage practices that eliminate the possibility of accidental injury to a child.

I hate to encourage this, but I was military as well and had to do things another way as well. What I did was get a Utah and Florida CHL's instead of Texas. I separated from the mil in Jan '10, and moved back to Texas. My FL license was coming up to expiration so I went ahead and applied for my Texas CHL recently--and got it last month. I appreciate the fact that a TX chl supports our great state, but out of necessity I had to apply elsewhere. Do what ya gotta do

From my understanding this is going to be changing shortly. I for one am glad because the qualifications for Texans to get your chl in texas is a 10 hour min class - other states it is a fill out this form and here you go.

From what I was told recently by the Texas DPS office in Austin - "Once this takes place - all of those Utah and FL licenses in the hands of Texas residents will be null and void".

There are currently zero approved online courses.

While that might be wishful thinking on the part of DPS, that bill did not pass the legislature this session, so it would be at least 2013 before it could be brought up again.

Utah has passed a law, effective May 10, 2011, that a non-resident license will only be issued to a person who already has a license from their state of residence, if that state has reciprocity with Utah. But, licenses already issued will be valid until they expire.

Thanks for clarification.

I would car carry under MPA when in TX until you can get the license you need.

He really can't "carry" under MPA :nono: . Of course, he can have loaded firearms for self defense in his vehicle under MPA. But as we all know, for all intents and purposes, he cannot "carry" concealed once he exits his vehicle.

I thought he was in Kansas. Different set of laws.

He may also be interested in the following, from the Kansas Attorney General's website:
