Well, I thought it was amusing...

Setting the scene: recently, I was at a social gathering of workplace cronies from a past era. The wives were the cronies, the husbands were the extras in the crowd. Most of the husbands were merely nodding acquaintances, but a few were long-term, 20+ years. I was talking with one of the long-termers.

Him: It’s getting kinda’ scary in the neighborhood around my office. I’ve started keeping a pistol in my desk.
Me: Hmmm.
Him: What? You don’t think I should?
Me: Well, no, I think that may well be a wise decision.
Him: I’d probably get a license, but there are so many places like banks and church that I can’t carry. And I
might want to carry a gun in my truck.
Me: Well, that’s not exactly true....
[ I proceed to mention 30.06 signage and Motorist Protection Act]
Him: Do you have a gun? What kind? ..... Do you carry?
Me: Well, yes. 9 millimeter..... And well, yes, I do.
Him: Aren’t those kinda’ big and hard to conceal?
Me: Well, apparently not........

[10 seconds of him, obviously processing the data, staring at me as I look back at him with a non-expressive face]
Him: .....Ohhhhh.....

Someone will be along shortly to explain why you should keep your carry status top-secret. But I'm all for encouraging others. Way to go!

I generally don't tell others and am cautious of the direction of a conversation, but it depends on the situation. Sawdust seemed comfortable with it once the conversation got to certain point. Sounds like Sawdust may have just found another shooting buddy.

I agree with previous comment a few lines above........There is a time and place to inform vs. deny whether one is carrying

I was at a dinner with friends. We were at a restaurant, with several people within earshot at our end of the long table. One friend had just taken the class, and was excited to talk about it. He then asked if I had a CHL. We were at a restaurant, with several people within earshot. I just smiled and told him quietly, "If I did, I wouldn't tell you. And if I didn't, I probably wouldn't tell you that, either."
That was the best I could come up with on short notice.

How about "I can neither confirm nor deny the fact that I may or may not have my CHL"?

I can picture the wheels turning in his head and the "dog hearing strange noise" expression on his face when he finally figured it out.

Well played indeed sir.
