I was at a new doctors office last week and as I filled out papers they asked for my insurance card and Drivers license. Not thinking I handed her my CHL and insurance card. It was to funny when I realized after she had copied it and handed it back. The lady at the desk was its ok.
I also noticed that in a bill they were talking about a person could use their CHL as identification to vote.

The CHLs now look very similar to the Drivers Licenses. I think the average person could mistake it for a DL if they don't look closely. There have been reports here of folks attempting to use a CHL as ID at various banks with mixed results. Some take it and some don't. I don't really understand why they wouldn't since it's government issued.

I opened a new business checking account with Bank of the West in Grapevine a couple of weeks ago, and the manager asked both my wife and me (she's a signatory to the account) for TWO picture IDs. We each have only two picture IDs, so we each tentatively offered both our TDLs and our CHLs. I grinned sheepishly at the manager, a very elegant woman, and said "I hope that's not too freaky for you." She said, "No, y'all are doing exactly the right thing."

It's a good bank.

I had thrown out the wrong DL (the new one) so the one I had at Bank of America in Lewisville was expired so he wouldn't accept it (I have no idea why a DL expiration suddenly makes the name, picture and address expire but, oh well). I brought out my CHL and he vapor locked. He nervously looked through the list and couldn't find it so he called the floor supervisor. She looked at the CHL and asked, "What's the problem?" He said he couldn't find it on the list. She asked him what was the number one entry. He said, "Texas drivers license or other identification issued by the state". She then asked, "What does it say over here in the corner of the license?" He said, "Texas Department of...oh." She just rolled her eyes at the rookie, smiled and apologized to me and went back to her office.

That's the only situation I've had to do it in. Opened an account with Wells Fargo, and he asked for 2 picture ids. It was either DL and CHL, or drive home for the passport, so I went with the CHL. He looked at it for a minute, then asked "What do you carry?". Turns out he has his CHL as well and we spent the next 5 minutes discussing what we carry.

A similar thing happened to me when I went to JSC to pick up my NASA badge. When I talked to their security person on the phone I was told I only needed my DL. When I went over to their security building they told me that since my old badge had expired, I couldn't use it as a government ID, so I needed another one in addition to my Texas DL. I had been waiting for several months for my badge and didn't want to have to reschedule so I asked if they would accept a CHL. She said "as long as it's not expired." She didn't say anything about it. Of course, since I was on Federal property, I wasn't carrying and didn't have a firearm in my car.

I have used it when asked for 2 forms of ID. Twice, the person said "Oh kewl, I have mine too, what do you carry?" or to that effect. I can also see a potential for someone seeing it saying "Don't carry in here" then you have been given notice. I do have to say i gave it one place just for the pucker effect, lol.

I was out with some friends bar hopping in Forth Worth a while back. Accidentally handed my CHL to the door guy. He didn't bat an eye, and I didn't notice until he handed it back. I keep my DL/CHL in the same windowed partition of my wallet and must have slipped one behind the other at the previous location.

I also have used mines at Walmart when I was buying ammo. The lady asked for Id so out it came.

I have tried to use it one time and it was refused as not being state issued identification, just stick with my DL or Passport, and yes I usually have both on my person.

I guess I'm a little weird about showing people my CHL. I don't understand someone's requirement to show two photo ID's. If we didn't have our CHL, what would you do? When asked for two I tell them the only other photo ID I have is my employer's ID badge. If that's not good enough I tell them they are out of luck then. So far, it has not been a problem. I just don't think someone I barely know or not at all needs to know that much about me.

That I can think of, I haven't shown my CHL to anyone except when buying my Henry. I have not been asked for ID by any LEO's in at least 10-15 years or more. None of my own family members have even asked to see it.

I've posted before that I often volunteer at my kids' school on election day, standing between the voting area and the rest of the school to make sure people don't wander off where they oughtn't. I've used my CHL to vote on some of those occasions. The bar code didn't work, but it has the DL# on the front, so they keyed it in by hand. No problems.

(And before you ask, a school AND a polling location? Of course I wasn't. But I still think it should be changed to allow it.)

Chase refused to accept my CHL when I was asked for a second form of ID (and I was already an account holder), but they were perfectly happy to accept a VISA with no photo

Wells Fargo, on the other hand, was happy to take TX DL & CHL as my two forms of ID when I fired Chase and switched my accounts to W.F.

Jerry Patterson mentioned @ the TSRA annual mtg last month that there is a bill in Austin to *require* banks to accept a CHL as a valid form of ID. Don't know where it stands...
