Defense of Property with or without CHL

So.... with Hurricane Ike 3 years down the toilet, my yard fence is still damaged. Luckily the neihbors still have chainlink fences surrounding our property. However, here in lies the problem. Both our backdoor neighbors and our next door neighbors have huge dogs. Irish wolfhound mixes and the backdoor people have pit bulls. They have not jumped the fence yet and are very aggressive when anyone is outside. Both neighbors we've talked to already...one saying "it's my guard dog" and the other saying "Get off my property"
Now in the case I carry if my older parents are mowing the lawn or outside grilling. Knowing that I am fully in the right to defend myself or my family on my own property, what will the consequences be for me if I put down one of their dogs if they do jump the fence? I know the reaction the police would have but what about the PETA-ish people(yeah one has a bumpersticker for the org)? I owned animals in the past and always took care of my animals making sure they weren't a nuisance.

Who cares what PETA thinks. If you are not famous or a person of influence, they will pay no attention.

you shouldnt have much concern if you put it down during an attack
and just to ask, is there something that is holding you back from restoring the fence? if they were that big of a concern that probably would be my first step

If a dog comes at you in an aggressive manner, put it down! This is the case if you on your property or public property with a CHL. Be sure of what is beyond the dog though just in case you miss. If you do not have a CHL you can still put the dog down if you're on your property. If your not on your property go with pepper spray.

PETA's ultimate agenda is the end of pet ownership of any kind. . . they're as against the neighbors as they would be against you. They'd rather euthanize healthy dogs (they put down around 90% of the dogs and cats they take in) than let them sit in a shelter or be adopted back out into slavery. They're also against service dogs of any kind.
I second the vote on fixing your fence and will add one for shooting to stop anything that attacks you or your loved ones with an intent to kill or cause serious bodily injury - whether it's in your yard or not.

I wouldn't be worried about PETA, I'd be worried about a lawsuit from the dog owner.

...if the dog attacks your dog...he can't sue if you kill his dog...if he attacks a person...he can...go figure...another law that needs to be changed......

I'd be willing to bet that quite often the owner would sing a different tune. I'm just saying, people sue all the time.

A lawsuit in this case would be laughable. In Texas, I am pretty sure you could only sue for the value of the dog. I am sure whatever attacks you isn’t worth much.
