There is going to be a forum on Concealed Carry on College Campus on February 3rd 2011.
My younger sister attends The University of Texas in Arlington and showed me the following event invitation she received through Facebook.
It might be worth checking out, I am curious to see their opinions and what they will discuss. Below is what the body of the invitation had in it.
"Student Congress invites you to make your opinion known on the Concealed Handguns on Campus issue. Learn more about how future concealed handgun legislation will affect your institution which if passed will allow individuals to carry concealed handguns on higher education campuses. Criminology Professors Sarah Phillips, Randy Butler, and Jaya Davis will be speaking. Dr. Alex del Carmen, Chair of Criminology and Criminal Justice will be moderating."
The Meeting is being held at:
Bluebonnet Ballroom, University Center at UT Arlington
February 3rd @ 6:00pm-9:00pm
Anyone have any thoughts? or is thinking of going? I may want to take a couple hours off of work and check it out.

I am a student at UTA and just took the CHL class yesterday. :)
I commute about an hour, and don't even have class that day, but I think I will make the trip up there anyways for it.

I suspect that the forum, because of the weather, did not take place.
If they reschedule for next week, I might try to attend. It might be interesting. I have taken classes at UTA myself, though not recently.

UTA says that their tentative reschedule date for this forum is 2/10 but that the room has not yet been confirmed. I'm supposed to get an e-mail upon the final arrangements.

I agree it won't affect you as a student. BUT if you ever visit a campus (either as an alumnus or visitor) and want to enter a building (the premises), such as attend a concert or public seminar or meet someone in the student union or go to the administration building to pick up your transcript in person or ... - you ARE affected.

I hope that they send me the e-mail as promised with all of the details. If I don't hear from them by Tuesday, I'll reach out to them again.
When I get the information, I'll post it in this thread.

I don't have the revised details, but I did see a poster for the original event last night.
It has a large drawing of a generic semi-auto handgun pictured from the muzzle end with a woman's hand tightly clutching the gun with her finger on the trigger. The whole picture looks pretty menacing; I wonder if that will be the tenor of the proceedings?

As promised, I tried to contact UTA this afternoon for an update. I haven't received a reply. If I do, I'll post the results. If I don't, I'm going to call them on the phone tomorrow. Given tomorrow's weather forecast for the Arlington area, that might not be fruitful either.
