Renewal

#1

Post by stroo »

This topic may have come up previously but my search didn't reveal an answer.

My understanding is that the DPS sends out a renewal package about 6 months before your CHL terminates. My CHL terminate in late January but I have not received anything from the DPS. Is that a problem or am I just being overly anxious?

Can I take a renewal class and file a renewal application without waiting for the DPS package or is the DPS package something you need in order to take a renewal class and file a renewal application?

Thanks.

I received a renewal notice, not a renewal package, about 6 months before my CHL expired.

I'm guessing here, but I don't think you need the renewal notice or package.

Just go online to start the renewal process. If it's too early, the website should tell you.

I want to say I had gotten a notice about my CHL expiring. However due to my schedule I didnt renew until after my CHL expired. So when i was ready I went online to register and pay. I filled out the information online, Then i noticed some changes because the DPS site said all i needed to send in was the CHL-100. I bet you can go online, register and pay and you are set. You will just need to submit the form I bet.

question: "or is the DPS package something you need in order to take a renewal class and file a renewal application?"

Application on renewals must be obtained from DPS or done online.

Mine also expires in late January.
I looked at the online info as directed. It looked to me like I needed to take the class and get the completed certificate/form before anything could happen, so I did not register online.

BTW, I did get a PA license a few months ago ($26) so I'm covered if something comes up and I can't get renewed on time.

You can renew online up to 6 months before you expire.

You must send in your application within 6 months after taking the renewal class.

You do NOT have to have your renewal paperwork in hand to take the renewal class.

So, in theory, you can take the class up to one year before you expire, then do your online app and send it in, if you time it just right.

good luck to you sir. In fact if you are looking for a class I suggest talking to Crossfire. The renewal class they do is excellent. I cant say enough good things about them. My instructor license expired and Im renewing that but to avoid any more delays i just went to the class Crossfire does having had them help me with stuff in the past. I refer people to them all the time as I know they teach the info not only right but in a way you will retain it.

I took my renewal class today. Then I went online to renew. Went through the login, but then the site only gave me options to obtain an instructor's license or to modify my current license. There were no options to renew my current CHL. Am I just too early in trying to sign up (my CHL expires late in January) or is something wrong?

Click on renew under Online Services on the DPS Concealed Handgun page.
Once inside, click apply under new users to start the process.
Hope this helps.

Thanks but the flow I am seeing doesn't go the way you describe it. I don't see any place to Click on renew under Online Services on the DPS Concealed Handgun page. I only see two buttons - one to apply if a new user and one to login if a returning user. I successfully logged in as a returning user but then it did not give me any option to renew my license. I will try however to sign up as a new user and see where that leads.

Thanks.

I waited awhile to go online again. I tried again this Saturday. There now was a flow for renewal of a CHL and my information was there. So I completed everything and sent in what I needed. Now I just wait.

Lesson: Don't expect DPS to have everything up and online 6 months before your license expires. They will get it up there sooner or later. Be patient. ;-)

CHL holder since 2006. Got my LTC / CHL Renewal 6 months early. Instinctively renewed online. Will I still have to wait 5 months for the renewed card? Did I understand right; there is no longer required Continuing Education classes or hours required for renewal.?
