Need you Opinion

Okay, I have had a CHL for awhile now and it is coming up for renewal next year. Since I have got my CHL, I have became a LEO. A lot of people ask tell me why renew when I can carry anyway. My main argument is that it makes buying a firearm faster.
STORY
I got pulled over by DPS, I was the passenger, I was open carrying with badge by firearm. He asked me for ID, and before reaching for my wallet which would have exposed my firearm to him, b/c I had to lift my hip up to get it, I showed him my badge/ID. He stated I don't need that, I need your license, I stated no problem but I wanted to ID myself before exposing the pistol and having him getting nervous. I then give him my license and CHL he asked me what I needed that for, I said I have had it long before I was a LEO. He just shrugged.
Anyways I probably will go ahead a renew, but just want ya'll opinion...

It all boils down to what works for you.
On a side note since he pulled over the driver can he really even ask you for ID, you at that point have done nothing wrong.

If you dont renew it, what happens on the odd occasion that you may be between jobs?

I wasn't required to present my driver's license, but I decided long ago when asked for it I would

LEOSA allows you to carry in all 50 states.
I think if I were in that position, I would not renew. It's a lot of money just to bypass a phone call.

Seems to me that LEO are not exempt from NICS, but CHL is.

I think the NICS bypass is worth it.

While it is obviously you decision to make, I would hope that you renew your CHL. For political reasons, I think that it is good to have as many responsible CHL holders as possible. It is nice to have solidarity between LEO and CHLers. Sometimes an "us against them" mentality can creep in on both sides, but we need to fight against that.

Not only would I recommend you renew, but I will point out that there is a big discount on CHL's for peace officers. The problems is you need a letter from the Chief with your discipline record and this can be hard or politically unwise.
Your choice on paying the regular renewal or the police rate of $25.

That's one of the reasons I didn't get a Texas CHL yet. I moved this year and I'm covered under reciprocity.

para45 - my opinion is renew.
Quick question - cannot a LEO who is between jobs and not affiliated with any dept. still carry on his peace officers license without a CHL?

A TX CHL does not protect you if you are open carrying. Why produce it? Is it common for off-duty / between jobs police to open carry and display a badge? Just curious...??
