I e-mailed DPS about my application status. The following is what I sent and the reply:

My concealed handgun application was sent in early January. In early February, I received part of the application back as it was incomplete. The application was completed and returned on February 13, 2005. Shortly thereafter, I received my PIN #.

The 60 days mandated for processing time is growing near. Is there a method which I may find out the status beyond the "processing application" message through the web site? Unless I am missing something, there is no option to speak with a live person by calling the 1-800-224-5744 number that is printed on the letter that contained my PIN#.

I did not count the days between the original application being sent and the incomplete application being returned.

Lucky you. I am almost to 60 days, maybe I should bug 'em like you and get it moving. :)

dolanp, have you gotten anything from the DPS yet? I've heard they send out a letter saying they've got it, and here's your PIN number to check on it. I haven't even received that yet. I wonder if i should drop them an email...

Well, I'm only at 35 days, so I guess it'll only take another, oh, 90 days to get here.

You guys have probably done this, but I strongly recommend that all CHL applications and any follow-up paperwork (new prints, etc.) be sent by FedEx or Certified Mail, Return Receipt Requested. If you don't have proof when they received it, then I'm convinced your paperwork goes on the bottom of the pile.

Dolanp: I'd start calling on the 60th day. I'm glad email worked for dws1117, but email is easier to ignore than a person on the other end of a phone!

Yeah I think it took about 5 weeks after they received it before I got the PIN in the mail.

Charles, do you know which number to the CHL division can actually yield a person on the other end?

I've called both of the 512 numbers. I never was able to get anyone on the 800 number. Who knows, they may not be answering any lines now!

If you can't get through to someone, I'd leave a nice voice mail in the morning and late afternoon everyday until you get a response.

Well I called, left a message, and later emailed. Even though previously they have responded within hours, they haven't responded to me all day. I wonder if they'll tell me my fingerprints are going to be 'unusable' or something...

It took me almost four months to get my first CHL after I mailed the
application package. That was in 1996. I called a couple of times
(this was WAY before E-mail was prevalent) and was told that they
were swamped with applications, and that they would get to mine in
due time. I finally got it, but it seemed like it took forever.

I know the wait is hard on you guys, but be patient. It WILL be
worth the wait. Besides, I've been waiting on a custom CCW holster
from High Noon for two months, and I'm getting "antsy" too.

I just think that as high as Texas' fees are compared to many other states, they should be a bit more efficient at getting the license to you. I could have a Florida permit in hand faster and cheaper.

Efficient and Government. 2 words that should never be in the same sentence unless joined by the word NOT.

When I sent my CHL Application in for the License it took a total of nine(9) days till I had it back in my hot little hand from DPS. Good service.
