Anyone know if the Old red Courthouse/Museum in downtown Dallas is posted? I checked Texas3006 but it was not listed.

I asked a passing security guard the question, and he responded positively, it is posted. He allowed that it probably wasn't "legal", but there was signage. Since my office is nearby, I walked over and took a look and sure enough, off the Main Street entrance, is a black on white "No guns allowed past this point" sign. May not be legal, but for me, the intent seems clear. Hope this helps some.

Since Old Red is now a museum, no longer a courthouse, and I presume government property, that's why NO sign applies (anything like the one that's posted or a legal 30.06 sign)?

We were in Goliad last June and visited the courthouse on the square. It also has a "No firearms allowed past this point" sign. As I understand it, that sign by itself does not keep me from carrying into the building. The fact that the building is indeed a courthouse is why I locked the pistol in the car.

I am always bemused by this attitude. If someone really had the intent to keep CHL's out of an establishment, they would spend the ten minutes on Google necessary to find out how to comply with the law. Since they can't be bothered to do some very simple, very basic, very quick research keeping CHLs out must not be all that important to them.

It seems pretty clear to me that they aren't concerned about CHLs or they would have done the quick check of the Intarwebz that would have turned up the requirements in PC 30.06.

And the search would tell them that CHLs can carry into that facility regardless of any sign posted (again, this assumes it is still government property).

Thanks for the leg work...literally! If this were a gas station or grocery store, a sign like that might prompt me to take my business elsewhere regardless of the legality of passing a non-compliant sign. In this case I don't have a choice though.

This is something that I have been confused on for a while now. Call me lazy for not looking it up. If a building is owned by the government a 30.06 means nothing? Can someone please explain in redneck terms for me? I thought 30.06 meant NO CARRY for CHL. Thanks!

Correct. There is a specific exception in 30.06, that states that 30.06 signs do not apply on government owned or leased property.

There is no legal way for them to prevent you from carrying there. Which makes sense, since its 'public' property, just like the streets, roads, etc.

Best be careful. It was, no doubt, a courthouse for some time, and although court is not held there anymore, it is still considered by many to be a courthouse. I'm not sure you'd beat the rap here.

I believe that if its not a courthouse anymore you are fine. It seems to me it would be like the state capitol. You can carry there. You can carry into the meeting rooms...so long as there is no meeting goin on.

It is tricky sometimes. That's why we must be diligent and places like this forum are truely great. It helps people, like me, that are not good with leagalese to learn the law and how to stay out of trouble.

That certainly does raise and interesting question. I would think the legal definition of the property would change when the function of the property changes (courthouse to museum/event hall), but who knows.
