Should I keep it at home?

Here is the scenario:
John carries his beloved Glock 24/6 and ½. His employer does not allow inside, so he keep his beloved in the car during working hours. Tomorrow, he need to drop his car for maintenance at the dealer, and he does not know if would be ok just to hide in the trunk.
Is it a good idea? If it is, what happens if the technician find the gun?

I used to either leave it alone or secure it somewhere if the gun was going to be in my way.

does he have a CHL ?
if not , i wouldn't leave a firearm in the vehicle while its in the dealerships possession . :nono:

remember , they are not responsible for any loss of items left in the vehicle .

When I get my car worked on, I don't leave anything in it that is not attached to the car.

I can't remember how many times acquaintances have told me how something in their vehicle disappeared, and the auto shop played "I know nothing! Nothing!"

The fine print on the service agreement always says they are not responsible for your property, including the entire car going missing.

The only way I would leave something in the vehicle is in a safe that is bolted down or attached to the body with a thick cable. Even then, you're depending upon the honesty of everyone in the shop who touches the vehicle.

I personally wouldn't leave anything of value (money-wise or sentimental) in a vehicle that will be spending time in a service facility. If you have a gunsafe in the vehicle that may be a different matter.

My dad made the mistake of leaving a pricey watch in his center console at NTB in Grapevine...well, it magically grew legs, even with the cops showing up and such.

You always hear "they are not responsible for your property" etc...well, one morning (years ago) I received a phone call from the dealership (car was there overnight for service)...."Sir, we need you to come down to the dealership to ID what's been taken from your car, we've had a break-in."

WHAT!??!!??

My nice, shiny, new (well a year or two old at the time) Mustang GT 5.0 was sitting on concrete blocks (tires & wheels GONE) minus the stereo, amp, subwoof, etc...

Suffice it to say that the dealer originally wanted me to use my insurance, I, of course, insisted that they take care of this, file it on their insurance, etc. They did...come to find out, it apparently was an inside job. So I ended up with everything being replaced, no cost to me, just the aggravation of the whole matter.

Not a dealer but my local car repair is where I take my car. After I started carrying in my car (before CHL) I went to one of the guys I know and said hey, would it be OK to put something behind the counter rather than leave it in the car? He said sure! When I brought in my Glock 19 in its original carrying case, he said, oh, cool. What your got? I showed it to him and then he showed me his Glock. He had the Time Planner carry case and I thought hey, I want one of those. So I bought one and still use it. Now I have a bunch of new CHL friends as practically everyone in that shop has their license. Heard some real good stories too! :fire

EDIT: I bought a small lockable safe that I leave it in in case of having to leave my car in someone else's hands or in a parking lot where I can't carry into a building.

I don't leave sunglasses in the car while at the shop, let alone my pistol. I would do something besides leaving it in the car.

Another thing to think about, if you have a bolted down, lockable safe in the car for storing a pistol, the shop you take the car to has tools and torches to take the safe loose. Not saying that the shop would or would not, just saying the tools are there.

Again, my $0.02 worth.

It's very rare that I take one of my vehicles to a shop, I do all of my own work.. The only time I do is when it's warranty work, and I leave nothing in the truck. Even my service truck, it takes a few hrs to unload everything out of it, about 20 K worth of parts, and who knows how much in tools and what not.. Last time I had to leave the truck at the dealership, it sat outside for a week in a bad part of town. I asked several times for them to put it inside at night, but they wouldnt ( it's also the last time the truck went to that dealership )....

Never leave anything inside a vehicle your dropping off somewhere, even more so a gun... When a customer leaves a vehicle at my shop, I request they take everything out of it. It's a pain, but I dont want to be responsible, accused of stealing stuff or anything else.. It's just better for everyone that way.

Leave it at home. Carry a good knife for the day.

Do you want to be the guy coming on here later upset that someone at the dealership stole it? :headscratch I'm not concerned about someone seeing my gun, I'm concerned about someone stealing it.

I used to work at a car dealership in College Station as a porter (clean guy who drives the cars around, washes them after service / body work, picks up and drops off customers...)

Anyhow, they flat told us that if anything came up missing out of a car that we had dealt with, that we would be investigated to the highest possible degree. We never had any problems. If a gun had came up missing, the dealership owners would have turned the entire lot upside down, and tossed all of our stuff until they found it. Things getting stolen from cars while they are being serviced is one of those things that people tend to tell all of their friends about, and that is REALLY bad for business, especially when you are the only dealer for 4 GM brands within 100 miles, so they made that really clear from day 1 that things walking off would not be tolerated.

On that note... I would NEVER leave anything even remotely valuable in my car while I am not the only person in control of the keys.
