Question about yor 3rd renewal, 4th permit

#1

Post by mikehp »

I saw a web posting stating that you do not have to take any of the tests, lectures and shooting qualification for this situation.
Just show up at class location, process paper work and pay reduced fee.
Is this true? I am interested, but want to be sure I am not doing something wrong and risk my license.
Thanks, Mike

That can vary from one instructor to another. First, I'd suggest getting DPS to confirm that you do meet the criteria for not having to take the class or shooting. You will still need to complete the DPS paperwork and pay their fee. You may not even have to show up for a class - unless you need the other services possibly offered there (which can often be obtained independently elsewhere). But ... in my not-so-humble opinion, you might best go ahead and take the renewal class. There were some major changes in the last few years and you might just learn something. ;-)

As long as you keep up with the current law there is no need to take the class. Visit this site often and get a copy of each new CHL book and your fine with the law part. If you don't shoot much you should schedule a time to go to the range each month or at least, and I do mean "least", once every renewal. There is no requirement and I will not pay money for someone to tell me what I know more about than the instructor, in most cases as my experience has shown me. I make a point to know what the law is, was and might be. I hope everyone with a CHL is the same way. I guess if someone that has had a license that long isn't sure about the laws and their ability to shoot they should take the FULL class and get acquainted with the laws concerning CHL. That is not a flame of anyone but I am coming to the realization that some CHL holders treat their privilege to carry protection as loosely as they do the rest of their life and never think about it after the class is over. I think it is shameful that anyone would take something that important so lightly. Again, that is a general statement and not meant for anyone but those guilty of that bad decision. Those types make us look bad because the data are looked on as a measure of CHL success or failure.

Which makes me think about the concerns about OC and no training being made wrong because some CHL holders take the class and never learn or practice what they learn. We don't see any real proof this type is doing things to warrant not championing unlicensed OC. They obviously exist. I think that is something that may be worth looking at closer in order to see if, per 1000 over time, we have seen a problem that would show reason for not wanting unlicensed OC. I don’t really don’t even know how that could be done. Just a thought and not a call to discuss OC on this thread. That is my opinion.

I have to agree with this general sentiment - I really did not get anything useful out of the classes I took. (Completed my 2nd renewal late last year.) Any reasonably active gunny will pass the shooting test with ease, and even if you don't read the CHL law booklet, odds are anyone with more than a room temperature IQ will at least pass the written test.

Jumping through the hoops is an annoyance, and I really didn't find it helpful to listen to hours of lecture that boils down to "Don't go looking for trouble just because you're carrying a gun."

Maybe the class was just designed to weed out people with no patience . . .
Original CHL: 2000: 56 day turnaround
1st renewal, 2004: 34 days
2nd renewal, 2008: 81 days
3rd renewal, 2013: 12 days

Check your local PD to see how much they would charge to do your prints and passport photos can be done elsewhere.

There is no way that I would pay any kind of reduced fee for a CHL class unless it is cheaper than doing your prints and photo yourself.

Having completed four different CHL classes, I can say that only the first one back in 1995 was actually informative. After all, we were starting from scratch then. The last three have all contained some degree of misinformation.

It's simply a requirement that I won't have to endure again until 2016.

If you have a digital camera and a white(ish) wall you can take your own picture and print the photos at Target for less than a buck. Your bank probably has someone who can notarize your forms at no charge. You can do the FAST fingerprints and reduce the chance of rejection delays.

i just did my 3rd renewal.
I made the decision to sit thru the entire class again, written test, shooting test, the works. I had a buddy who had never gotten one, so I did it with him.
I figured it wouldnt hurt for DPS to have on file I have currently passed their cirriculum for the license...

but to answer your original question, you are not required to take the written or shooting test, you have many options for getting this done.
