CHL carry friendly workplace list?

I'm working at a place that I like and do not want to leave for at least a little while, however it's a little upsetting that the company policy strictly forbids guns inside the building and even explicitly mentions concealed carry, although 80% of the people that I work around think as I do. It got me looking around and wondering if a list of carry friendly workplaces exists anywhere at all?

Why not work on changing the rules?

There are two principles that motivate most employers to ban weapons as a policy (some even ban pocket knives ... but that is another story):
  • 1. Liability insurance
    2. Litigious society

I would love to work on changing the rules. We've had several informal discussions about gun carry during off hours while a few of the managers were around. We were able to disagree with each other respectfully. But as the new guy in a company with sites in several continents my voice will not have that much impact. There are also several extremely vocal fellows there and if they haven't made an impact I would be doubtful of making one myself.

Yeah I understand much of it is due to liability concerns. My rebuttal to those would be the law suit we would file if one of my coworkers went on a shooting spree and the company had denied my fellow CHLed coworkers the ability to defend themselves from it by policy. But it's hard to make those kind of points without sounding threatening :)

You could always make it a money game if it's really for insurance reasons, which I doubt. Is it more cost effective to hire a full time security guard (assuming only one is needed) with benefits, or to change a few words in the employee handbook which negates the need for a guard?

I have been thinking about this the last few weeks. I know I work with several CHL holder but the company I work for doesn't allow carrying on company property. I had considered sending an email to HR but think this might be a bad idea cause I am sure that they security would start looking at me harder. We are not even suppose to have any firearms in you vehicle but there is no security on my trip home so I am going to continue this until my boss tells be something.

So I have been thinking that it might be a better idea to since an anonymous letter by interoffice mail. And maybe even talk to other CHL holders to do the same.

I'll add too that I suspect that any template for any employee hand book will have boiler plate text banning guns in the work place. Unless the employer specifically is pro-CHL (a chl'r him self), the text probably stays just as 99.9% of whatever else legal jargon is in the hand book text. I would guess to that if an employer asked a lawyer to write an employee hand book for him, guns will be part of the boiler plate text as well.

I was an HR Director in a previous life and can confirm that most of the time it's in the template or drafted by the lawyers. I don't think anyone wants to be anti-gun but they really want to avoid issues and litigation in the workplace. I don't expect this to change unless we can get a law passed that prohibits employers from not allowing employees to leave their weapons in their vehicles.

Do we have a template letter that we can send to HR people? Something that says:

It has come to our attention that you have a policy which does not allow permit legally empowered gun owners to carry on your property. We wish to note that individuals who have taken the time and trouble to assure their fellow citizens that they are responsible,well meaning,and vetted gun carriers are being descriminated against. We realise that mamy of you have reflexively banned handguns because of your perception that only strange individuals would carry a gun and that consequently they may endanger their fellow workers. The CC experience has instead shown that there is a body of individuals who carry because they accept the responsibility of protecting themselves - knowing that no one has the resources to protect all in the split seconds that count. By depriving them of their right to protect themselves and consequently their fellow workers, you are assuming the liability for their protection. You have deprived legally empowered individuals of their ability to protect themselves. You now assume the risk and you now face the certaininty that if something occurs, you will bear the financial consequences. Some of you argue that it is because of an OSHA provision to provide a safe working environment. Granted unpermitted individuals carrying guns in the working place may pose a risk, because they have shown themselves unwilling or inable to provide others with assurance of their capablility to carry responsibly. The others however have demonstrated it and your policy endangers them and their fellow employees" You have not mitigated your risk you have replaced it with a much more potent one - the knowledge that you may personally be responsible for loss of life and the certainty that the CC citizens of this country will bring your company to account for its policies.

If you plan to send that to someone you may want spell out everything.......CC= concealed carry. You dont want them to think you to lazy to spell out a couple of words. Not to mention than many of them wont even know what CC means.

I work for a VERY large security company I do not want to name. We also have a ban in place. We are not allowed to carry in our company vehicles at any time (even in route to a hunting trip). We all have been given permission to call for armed security gaurds whenever we feel we need them. Some sites are not to be visited unless we have a guard with us.

I do not like the policy, but I am an employee. It is up to me to give up my job and find a new employer who will allow CHL holders to carry at work. I am not willing to do that at this time.

When I am not at work I carry. When I am at work, I have a guard. My idea is to get about 4 or 5,000 of us to ask for security guards at the same time. Maybe we can make them look into the CHL option? :evil2:

I own a very small business in Plano, but nonetheless have an employee manual. In the chapter (subsection) that covers prohibited items and prohibited activities:

"The unlicensed possesion of firearms or other weapons in or on any company property is prohibited".

A friend in Missouri worked for a company that had an overall ban like is being discussed. He was fortunate enough to arrange several meetings with the right people and got their handbook amended to read as above. But it took alot of time to get it that way.
