problem with my application

i originally posted this in the waiting room

but i think this might be the better place for it

i just got mail from the dps that said:

the certificate of training form (TR-100) you submitted with your application has:
a certificate number that was not issued to your instructor. (contact instructor)

has anyone else had this problem?
i didnt know certificate numbers were assigned to instructors
i guess so no one fakes a TR-100 form?

ive tried calling the range i took it at and they got my info and will contact the instructor.
i called the instructor and left him a message
i called the dps and steve said it could have been some mix up with forms from the instructor:
1. he can either contact his technical support person to transfer my certificate number over to him or
2. he can issue me a new certificate

i finally got a hold of the instructor and there was a mix up of the TR-100 and instructors teaching at the place i took it at.
he was going to try to transfer the certificate number to himself
i asked him if he could just give me another TR-100 (they cost $25!!!)
but he said he would give me a discount since he kinda messed up on it ($10)
he is going to talk to the range and give me a call tomorrow

Roff - I have a couple of problems with this whole situation.

Your instructor traded TR-100s with another instructor at the same location? That is not in line with DPS policy. TR-100s are numbered and assigned to instructors, and are not transferable. In extreme cases, when DPS was out of certificates due to printing problems, they have allowed them to be transferred, but you have to contact them BEFORE you use the certificate to get it transferred.

And, BTW, instructors pay $5 for each TR-100, NOT $25! This guy screwed up, not you. He needs to own up to it and make it right, and now he wants to make a few extra bucks off you, to boot. Thats just wrong!

I agree with Linda. This screw up is completely your instructors fault. He should be eating any costs related to it. Then on top of him trying to make you pay costs, he is lying to you and trying to make a $5 profit on you by charging you more for the TR-100 form than it cost him. If it were me, I'd post his name so that other's don't use this dirt bag.

the place i signed up to take the chl (memorial shooting) hired the instructor (who is also hpd) to come teach. so he is not getting the $135 from each person who took the class but a certain amount paid to him by memorial shooting.

from what he (the instructor) told me there are a few instructors who rotate teaching there and there was a mix up when they ordered the forms.
he said it was $25 for the whole packet including the TR-100

would it be faster for me to just take it to austin and hand it in in person or just to mail it in after i get the new TR-100?

Instructors don't pay for packets. They come WITH the TR-100s. Same $5

It sounds like they are trying to take advantage of you. Instead of accepting responsibility for their mistake, they want you to pay for their mistake. Even worse, they aren't just asking you to cover the cost of the certificate but they want to make a profit on the certificate to reward them for their mistake. If I understand correctly, you paid $135 to a shooting range for the CHL class and they hired (sub contracted) the instructor to teach the class. I think the range and the instructor need to work this out between themselves and you shouldn't pay a penny for their mistake.

I would also complain to DPS in Austin. If the instructor and range don't make it right this week, I would make the complaint formal and in writing by Certified Mail.

:iagree:

Making a mistake is one thing... happens to everyone from time to time. Not owning up to it and correcting it quickly without charging you is just not acceptable.

hes offering to fix it by transferring the certificate number to him
i assume that would take a little longer than just asking for a new TR-100 so i went that route

i havent heard from the instructor since the day i found there was a problem
his wife finally called me and told me there are 5 other people with the same problem
so he is just going to call the dps and have the certificate numbers transferred over to him
any instructors know how long the transfer process takes?

Once you email DPS to have the certificates transferred over, it should take no longer than 1-2 days. I regularly teach with another instructor and once we had a mixup with the TR-100s. I emailed the instructor email address we have for DPS and they transferred the TR-100s within a day.

Sorry you are having these issues. Unfortunately there are some instructors out there that do not live up to their obligations in a timely manner and provide the best level of service.

Hope it gets sorted out very soon.

Cheers!
