I have tried to read through the CHL law book I got when I took my class and it is confusing in certian areas. So here is my question.
I have to go and pick up a relative at the airport this afternoon. I know I can't CHL past the security checkpoint. Can I leagally carry in the ticket counter/baggage/passenger pick-up area? Or is the entire airport offlimits? Where would I find this info in my 2005-2006 Texas CHL Laws Handbook?

Welcome to the forum.

You are good to go in an airport, other than the secure area. This is in sections 46.03 and 46.035 of the penal code.

Most airports are owned by cities or counties and cannot legally be 30.06 posted. A few try, though. I can say from personal experience that Hobby in Houston is not posted and you will have no problem there.

DAL, Love Field has a rather confusing sign that means nothing legally.

As long as you're not crossing a checkpoint, you're golden.

I have personally seen 30.06 signage posted on the automatic doors to the baggage claim/pick up area at SAT. Term 2 within the last 3 months. Those doors are quite busy with signs but that is one that I did notice.

The airport itself (in general) is NOT off limits, only the secure boarding area (and other access to the planes) is unless it is legally posted. (And the secure areas have big signs and armed guards so you can usually tell when you are approaching those.)

I have personally checked my carry by going to the ticket counter at many airports in several states and asking for an "unloading room" to allow me to place it in the locked box they require. In Austin, they are nice about it. In Seattle they are polite but were not thrilled by this.

But if you are PICKING UP relatives, chances are baggage claim, and especially the drive up for that, isn't even an potential issue.

You mean that when I took my teenage daughter to DFW Airport this morning to leave for Romania, I could have carried in there?

I wasn't sure, so I unarmed, then ended up going back to the pickup to put up the loaded magazine I forgot to take out of my purse. I should have trusted my first instinct. Oh well, now I know when I go back to pick her up, I'll be able to carry in there.

Used to be you could go through the checkpoint to see your daughter off at the gate, but they pretty much disallowed that anyway (except maybe for unaccompanied minors which probably wasn't and issue with a 'teenager' anyway.)

At JFK (not that you can carry there) they have at least one terminal where the FRONT DOOR is the security point so you cannot go to the ticket counter without being in the secure zone (unless they have changed it).

At Houston (Bush) Intercontinental you CAN get to the ticket counters but not through the obvious door from the parking garage -- you have to go down to baggage and come up through the elevator. (I haven't been there in a while either.)

The deal is that Houston was built JUST BEFORE the "hijjacking to Havana" craze and checkpoints to they set up the entry so you cross the concourse/corridor to get to ticketing -- no problem until they had to secure that while corridor.

Agree with others that you're okay as long as you don't go through a metal detector.

When traveling, I use the "family restroom" to unload when departing and load up when arriving. You can lock the door and have your luggage with you.

Good tip. Especially for re-loading as I make a point of insisting on the airlines providing me an "unloading room".

Showing the flag. Requiring everyone to stick to the rules if they are going to restrict our rights they don't get to increase that restriction SIMPLY by acting uncomfortable or surprised when we exercise them.

No, there weren't any signs, and they wouldn't let us go with her to the gate. We just stood outside the security checkpoint and watched. She's gone on a 9 day mission trip to Romania with 24 other youth from our church. I'll carry at the airport when I go pick her up.

BTW, we did have a little oops going through security. She's never been a commercial plane before, and I haven't flown since before they've made all the new security changes since 9/11, so we were kind of winging it. Well, you are not allowed to bring any liquids on the plane over 3 oz, and then they have to be in one quart sized baggie, anything bigger than that has to be put in your checked luggage. She was told to bring snacks for her stay in Romania, so we bought her several different kinds of snacks, and a 12 pack of 8 oz. bottles of water. She packed the water in her duffel bag, but forgot it was in there when she went through security. So when her bag goes through the x-ray machine, it's flagged. The security people are going through it, and I see my daughter getting all nervous, and she looks at me and points her finger in my direction. Then a security officer come back to all the parents standing watching their kids, and she's got a cart with bottled water and asks, "So which of you moms am I supposed to give this to?" I'm looking a little sheepish, and the security guards are getting a good laugh out of it.

I was going to the Hobby Airport in Houston. As I approarched the main doors I saw a trio of signs one of which was a firearm sign, (no where near 30.06 looking) it looked like the letter "L" with the long leg of the "L" facing to the right and the short leg facing down with some added lines. I'm guessing it was supposed to look like a revolver. The lettering was mabey 1/4" tall. I saw no 30.06 signage on the main doors. Walked in got my Aunt rolled her out and went home.
