Houston Theater District

#1

Post by anygunanywhere »

Mrs. Anygun and I have tickets for the theater tonight - Hobby Center Sarofim Hall on Bagby. Any compliant postings I need to worry about? Those theater patrons can be pretty rowdy.

The Verizon Wireless theater (next door to the Hardrock Cafe) is correctly 30.06 posted (compliant), but I don't know about Hobby Center Sarofim Hall.

Anyone else?

Yes. I did not know anything about it until Mrs. Anygun asked me to get tickets. Really looking forward to it.

Have you seen it?

It looks like Hobby Center has valid 30.06 postings:

No I have not seen it, I bought my parent tickets for Christmas, they are going this week. I have heard nothing but great reviews about the show. Have fun.

I will let you know about the postings. I would bet that the owner is a not-for-profit artsy 501-(c)3 tax shelter for elites who do not want pond scum armed when we go to the theater to get some culture.

One of these days when we get together over food and beverage and gunpowder I will tell you about the time Mrs. Anygun and I went to the theater in San Francisco and did not realize that we had bought tickets on one of those special parade days.
  :nono: :grumble

Hobby Center has apparently compliant 30.06 posted on the front doors. Wortham Center does not. Not sure about the Alley or Jones Hall.

Enjoyed the show. Language was strong but the music was great.

The Hobby Center Sarofim Hall has the correct one inch letters on the front doors, but arguably once again white letters on clear/slightly tinted glass is not contrasting. The signs are at the bottom of the doors and really are not in a conspicuous place. They could be easily missed if one is paying attention to ones date as Mrs. Anygun looked quite attractive last night in her evening attire. Needless to say I did not take the time to check for spelling. She has that effect on me.

There was no pistol buster graphic, just the text.

If you are allowed in the stage entrance you will never see the 30.06 but a sherrif deputy will let you in.

I have a keycard, so it's not a problem. However, there is a door to the stairwell of the admin building that's usually open when the theatre is open. If you go up to the 2nd floor, you can walk across to the main lobby. There is no posting.

I thought the Hobby Center was city-owned property. Does anyone know for sure?

Wortham Center is city owned. Hobby Center is owned by Houston Music Hall Foundation.

This site seems to indicate that the Hobby Center is owned by the City of Houston:
http://www.houstontx.gov/events/hobby.html

This page says it is managed by "the Houston Music Hall Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization":
http://www.thehobbycenter.org/hobbyprod ... us/FAQ.htm

HCAD does not have a record for 800 Bagby, so the entire site must go by a different address.

I just spoke with one of the executives of Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. The City of Houston owns title to the land only. Houston Music Hall Foundation built and owns the facility. They have an arrangement with the city whereby the land was 'donated', but the city retains ownership.

I wonder how that works with regards to PC 30.06.
