My daughter is leaving for college this fall and it is a 7 hour drive. She will be traveling between Texas and Arkansas. She is 19.

I am looking for resources about whether she can have a firearm in her vehicle.

I have asked Uncle Google but I can't find anything clear (not that I expect laws to be clear to a layperson). Are there any resources that can be recommended that might shed some light on this?

It's kinda scary out there.

In Texas, in her vehicle with it concealed she should be good under the Motorist Protection Act. I don't know about the rest.

(a) A person commits the offense of carrying a weapon if he or she possesses a handgun, knife, or club on or
about his or her person, in a vehicle occupied by him or her, or otherwise readily available for use with a
purpose to attempt to unlawfully employ the handgun, knife, or club as a weapon against a person.

On October 17, 2018 the Arkansas Appeals Court stated in case No. CR-18-353 http://www.handgunlaw.us/documents/agop ... vState.pdf Jamie Taff v. State of
Arkansas: (“(I)n general merely possessing a handgun on your person . . . does not violate § 5-73-120(a)
and may be done if it does not violate other laws or regulations.”). Under the clear language of section 5-
73-120(a), the possessor of a handgun must have an unlawful intent to employ it as a weapon against a

Note: 5-73-120 was amended and passed as above in 2013. There has been uncertainty with people in
authority (AG’s, Governors, Mayors, Police Chiefs etc.) saying the law didn’t and some stating it did
allowed Permitless Carry. The above court case has finally settled that argument. Permitless Concealed and
Open Carry is now legal for those who can legally possess a firearm!

You should consider OC spray as a less contentious self defense tool. Even when carrying a deadly force tool, it is good to have something between a "harsh word and a gun" (Chuck Haggard).

Since she has worked at the local mall for 3 years, she is accustomed to her taser and spray, but always good to reinforce their usefulness.

Also, in answer to the "Campus Carry", it appears to be a bit more strict than Texas. She can secure it in her vehicle, but it requires a permit with a special endorsement to carry on campus.

Ar has a peaceable journey law. It's also defined as a distance of 3 counties or more. Don't know their age or permit requirements.

A problem for girl-child was that she lived on campus, where she can't carry a gun without a license. Keeping it in a safe in the car is a legal option, although not an attractive one.

SABRE Red is good. Gel is not good. It can take up to 45 seconds to take effect if it does not hit the eyes. The twist tab unit has been known to be inadvertently activated.

It’s a great website. I recommend it be your first stop. The next stop should be the state laws for the respective state and read the actual posted laws on the gov website to confirm. At least that’s what I do when I travel out of Tejas.

My daughters haven't played any form of baseball/softball since they were 7 years old. But I still got them both Louisville Sluggers to take to college just in case they get bored and decide to join a team. Clubs are sometimes illegal, but sports equipment is generally OK.

They also both have several form factors of OC, and audible alarms for their key chains.

I also considered getting them an extra padlock with some 550 cord on it so it doesn't get lost. You never know when you'll need an extra lock

Point being that there are a lot of options out there other than a firearm.

Make sure they have a fielders glove and a few softballs or baseballs to go along with the bat. Because, sporting equipment.

+1 for POM. Easier to deploy. Less likely to deploy accidentally.
I carry the pocket clip version in my weak side pocket just like a folding knife.
My daughter and my son's GF carry the key-ring version with their car/house keys.
