Stay very aware of the area beyond your target. Have a plan for what to do if shooting isn't a safe option, and tell others to have one as well. Children should not be left unattended until this is over.

I think reasonable people agree that dogs could cause serious bodily injury or death.

I would be very sad if I had to use deadly force to stop a dog from being a dog. If a dog just need a little education to leave me alone, I'd much prefer to season it with spicy knowledge sauce and let it ponder it's life decisions. Sabre red works on dogs and it's <$15 on amazon. Easy for me to have a couple in different locations (pocket, wife's purse, dog's leash, etc.). Sabre red can also help educate two legged fools too.

Sorry that bad owner is putting you in this situation.

A pitbull attacked ChildV's dog on Saturday night.


This happened at poolside in a Dallas apartment complex. The dog's owner and ChildV's gentleman friend pulled the pit off of ChildV's dog. ( a rather dangerous thing to do IMHO)
The emergency vet bill was over $1500. ChildV has filed a police report.
I reminded ChildV about Texas Code 822.013 https://statutes.capitol.texas.gov/Doc ... HS.822.htm and that the pit's owner is responsible for all of the damage done by the attacking dog.

ChildV said she remembered that from her LTC class and that she told her friends that her Dad would have just shot the dog. I told her that she was right but I would have had two things to consider: How to shoot the pit at a crowded pool without collateral damage; and how to conceal my 1911 in my speedo.

I am glad you are reporting these situations. It matters. Particularly in the event of an eventual lawsuit. Hopefully not your lawsuit, but eventually something horrible will happen and the owner will get sued if this continues. Whether or not the owners/911/police/animal control will do anything or not, it is vital you do what a reasonable person would do. Let the failures in these situations be someone else's.

Fox OC spray works phenomenally against most dogs. An excellent first line of defense. Especially for family that doesn't have a license to carry. Don't walk out of the house without it. If you see the dog loose, even at a distance... OC Spray should be in your hand, ready to deploy at in an instant.

Also, remember that when you are talking to 911 the call is being recorded. If you make your case over the 911 call... This dog has been terrorizing the neighborhood for weeks/months, my wife/kids are in danger an afraid to leave the house, I keep calling and you don't care/ don't want to take action... It encourages them to take action. Most cities have laws against dogs running loose, whether they attack or not.

In the event that the authorities fail and OC isn't enough, obviously awareness and carrying your loaded pistol whenever you leave your home is a must.

Pit Bulls were bred to fight. I have seen some of the sweetest Pits and some of the meanest. My neighbor was jogging in the neighborhood and attacked by a Rottweiler, multiple leg injuries and the city made the owner destroy the dog. He bought another one and it attacked my wife walking with my daughters lab. Fortunately no injuries. Neighbors don't necessarily learn. My wife now carries a Sjambok when she walks that dog and this was the incident that convinced her to get a LTC. Midway USA sells Sjambok as does ColdSteel. They are not considered clubs and are legal now.

Since the governor signed the bill allowing clubs, etc., I would guess that carrying a baton would be legal as of 9/1/2019. I would hate to kill a dog but don't mind beating the dickens out of it if need be. Pepper spray may or may not work. As a former meter reader in my youth I battled many a dog. The trick is to have something in one hand to let it bite onto and with the other hand and an appropriate weapon beat it over the head. My problem now is that I am careless and when I go for the mail I don't carry anything. Need to change that.

That is my experience, too. I ride bike and carry OC. I've had a number of times when aggressive dogs have chased me. When i'm sure that I can get away (usually smaller dogs), I just keep pedaling. If i don't think that I have enough speed to outrun a larger dog, I dismount and put my bike between us. I draw the OC and double check wind direction. It would be really bad to spray it into the wind, hoping to hit the dog. Nearly every time that I've done that, I've drawn an irate response from the dog's owner. I figured that I would end up spraying both of them - and I'm OK with that. How it is my problem when someone's dog attacks me and is supposed to be on a leash is not clear to me.

My sister in PA had one of her crippled Pomeranians attacked in her fenced yard by a pit bull. My sister specializes in dog rescues of Poms with special needs and this little guy has only one eye. The pit cleared her 4 foot fence grabbed my sister's dog in its mouth and shook it. I understand this is a standard tactic to kill a smaller animal. The dogs owner jumped the fence, too, and grabbed her dog, forcing it out of the yard. My sister, through animal control, took the pit owner to court over her $1,300 vet's bills and won - until the owner appealed. Now, the case will drag out and my sister may loose the testimony of an eye witness to the attack. There is now a hostile environment from the neighbor whose granddaughter owns the pit. Part of the original settlement was that the pit was declared a dangerous animal and not allowed in public without a muzzle. The dog could not be brought to my sister's neighborhood. Now, with the appeal, the woman and her dog could show up at any time. Animal control can do nothing. My point is that the legal system does not favor those who are attacked and or injured by out of control dogs. Even with an iron clad, open and shut case, the dog may not be dealt with. I suspect it would get worse if the dog were shot and killed, probably depending to some extent on the jurisdiction in which that occurred.

That's sad chasfm11, all the occurrences on our street the same response from law enforcement is "no one got bit". What will it take for action, someone to get malled? I have letters from neighbors to submit to the judge along with pictures and a video I'm hoping something can be done before damage is done.

The young couple had a baby girl. When she was three the baby and the dog were in the backyard together. It tore the girls face off. She survived, but it took two hundred stitches to put her face back on.

The parents had the dog put down.
