Hmmm.... I didn't even know this was an issue. I live pretty rural where deer are hit all of the time. Someone will almost always stop and put it out of it's misery if it's still alive. (Hear about it all the time during local talk). Call a game warden? The "buzzards" will have picked it clean buy the time they show up.

Wow, I am surprised that after the collision he didn't stop to survey the damage to his vehicle and the deer. Hitting a large animal with a car can cause major damage to both the car and the animal.
And sometimes the people in the car.

I would think that would be obvious, but you never know.

That pretty much was our experience in Montana with our little bear cub. To them, it ain't no big deal...apparently.

We had a deer that impaled herself on a 4' residential fence when I lived in the city. I became aware of it from the 3 gun shots that were made by the local PD.

Anybody remember the 911 call from the guy who threw what he thought was a dead deer in the back seat of his car?

Go to YouTube and search for "deer in back seat of car 911". I couldn't find a censored version so I can't post a link. Warning, strong language.

I expect that I might be somewhat excited if I had a live deer in my vehicle that didn't want to be there. Oh snap!

It's not an issue in the country only in the more urban areas. There a cop can be their in under 10 min so you can let them do the shooting. Out in the country where it may be hours you just put the animal down and only call the warden or sheriff so the meat doesn't go to waste and you can't get in trouble for taking a game animal out of season. Of course more than a few of my back woods relatives might forget to call but that's on them.

There it is, we rural rubes don't have to be concerned with dispatching crippled game animals on the roadways. I'm starting to feel better even though Alabama lost tonight.

Parks & Wildlife Code

Sec. 61.060. DEFENSE TO PROSECUTION: HUMANE DISPATCH OF CERTAIN GAME ANIMALS AND BIRDS. (a) In this section:
(1) "Dispatch" means to kill by any humane method.
(2) "Game animal" has the meaning assigned by Section 63.001.
(3) "Game bird" has the meaning assigned by Section 64.001.
(b) It is a defense to prosecution for a violation of this chapter or of a regulation adopted or proclamation issued under the authority of this chapter by the commission that the actor dispatched a game animal or game bird that:
(1) was mortally wounded, not through the actor's conduct; or
(2) behaved in a manner that:
(A) is inconsistent with the manner in which a game animal or game bird that is not diseased typically behaves; and
(B) leads a reasonable person to believe that the game animal or game bird poses a substantial risk of serious harm to itself, a person, or other wildlife.
(c) The commission may adopt rules, including rules concerning the disposition of a game animal or a game bird that has been dispatched under this section, to implement this section.

So, if you hit a deer and it's mortally wounded you can't put it down? :smilelol5: :smilelol5:
"A mortal wound is a very severe and serious injury whether accidental or inflicted intentionally, which leads directly to the death of the victim. Death need not be instantaneous, but follows soon after." Wikipedia
What's funny about an animal suffering until it dies?
Try reading the way that the law is worded and what I said again. Not sure how you interpreted that out of what I said.

I don't think they ever called 911, but I remember it!

The OP asked about an injured animal, but the conversation stayed in the "game" category so far. So, to expand this...what if it were a dog that was severely wounded?
Your best option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.
When those fail, aim for center mass.
