Re: Relocating to Texas
A lot of new things to consider. Texas has a reputation of such a super pro gun state but honestly carry laws in VA are a bit more relaxed and permissive (putting on my helmet and ducking down waiting for stones flying my way ).
One thing that makes things a lot easier in VA is Constitutional (unlicensed) open carry. Any weapon that is legal to posess can be carried without any permit as long as it's not concealed. This could be a handgun, a full size Ka-Bar knife or a Japanese katana - pcik whatever you like or all 3 at the same time.
Last year my permit was expiring and I forgot to apply for a renewal on time. They ended up issuing it in less than 2 weeks (instead of 45 days permitted by law), so I was without a permit for only less than a week, but I didn't have to worry about leaving my gun at home. All I had to do is make sure my shirt is tucked in when I was outside of home/vehicle and my sidearm is in plain view whenever I'm in public.
Police is also well conditioned to this mode of carry, even here in Northern Virginia DC suburbs - generaly a pretty lefty area - and know not to bother peaceful open carriers. It's definitely not something you see every day in this part of the state, but police is well trained on the law and very rarely cause any problems...
Come on Texas, out of all states you should have Constitutional Carry, open or concealed! Look at AZ, AK and VT and catch up!
