I was on Packing.org for years before finding this site. It was helpful before it deteriorated.

I, too, was one of those. Early on, I expressed a couple of opinions that were contrary to most on the board. Most members here responded with respect. TAM, as usual full of a great deal of patience and tact, worked with me to see the other side of the coin and which helped me to shift my view on these issues.

However, a couple of members resorted to labeling pretty early-on before they even really knew where I was coming from. It is human nature so I don't want this to come across as scolding, but I think it is fair to say that the rules against personal attacks are applied dis-proportionally to those who disagree with the majority. Again, human nature.

That said, I am glad I persisted as I really enjoy being a part of this community. I hope I contribute as much as I partake.

But along these lines, I think remembering a few items might make our board even more welcoming:

1. Trolls cannot always be sifted out within a couple of post. Give someone with differing opinions a little more time.
2. You gather more fly's with honey than vinegar. TAM should be given a metal for this.

As a new guy to the forum, I want to say what an asset it is to have this resource. This forum is such a valuable place to learn, educate, dialog, encourage, and simply vent to understanding people. Even respectful disagreements serve to: a) allow us to see different point of views, backgrounds, interpretations, etc., b) challenge our beliefs - which will either change or strengthen them, and c) allow us as an online community to share our common bond.

I've learned quite a bit about the CHL process, defensive mindset, practicalities of carrying daily, etc from this forum. It has been a gold mine of information for me. As a veteran of many different types of message boards, this is the tamest I've ever been a member of and it is full of genuinely good people. Sadly there are a lot of gun related forums that are chock full of information but the personalities are so thorny that it's not much fun to participate there.

Terry, I'm glad you think so, because more recently I feel like I've been crabby and impatient due to the current political situation. But, you're right that, even if I haven't practiced it to perfection lately, a calm and reasoning tone and a little respect for the other individual accomplishes more than a good browbeating......even if the latter scratches a deep itch. In other words, I actually am annoyed by a lot things, but I make an effort not to inflict it on the other guy. That can be a real strain sometimes because my screen name was chosen because I do not suffer fools lightly.

As an even older member that LT, I also remember THOSE posts. It almost had me go elsewhere but the wisdom and overall spirit of the board had me to stay. We did have to look past THOSE posts from time to time. Even though a lot of what was posted was correct, it was the overtones that were the turn off.

For me, although I dont post a lot, this board has been a place of knowlege and information by a lot of great folks.

I tip my hat to Charles, LT and all of the other mods that keep it a great place to come.

Also, remember, the Bible tells us that if we have a problem with someone, we should go to that person and work it out.

As I said, I dont post a lot but read almost every day. Learn something new almost every day as well.

I have been a member since the board was first established #18. In the early days there were no moderators and there were a LOT pompous condescending posts. Finally, a set of rules and moderators were set up. I doubt I could do the job that LT, KeithB, Crossfire, Charles and the other mods do because like TAM I don't suffer fools lightly and tend to be tactless (or is that tactical?) when dealing with them. Thanks to all who make this the best little gun board in Texas.

eta: There were several times I came within an inch of bailing out on this site. I'm glad I stayed!
