A valid 30.06 sign is very relevant to anyone who was not verbally told "no guns allowed" and to potential new members walking in off the street. If I was in the market for a gym and saw that sign on the door, I would just drive on to the next closest gym and give them my business (then write a formal business letter to the manager of this gym and CEO at corporate with a copy of my new contract with their competitor and an explanation of why they missed out on my business).

So, my feeling is I like LIfetime Fitness better than anywhere else, and practically speaking I'm not sure I'm comfortable disarming in a locker room prior to working out. I suppose one option would be to carry in a fanny pack or some other way so that I could just put a container in the locker with my street clothes. But since I was given 'verbal notice', I suppose that option is out. I did ask if that policy extended to law enforcement, and he said it did.
I like Lifetime because it is close to where I live and the facilities are nice. I generally can't stand supporting businesses that (successfully) deny me my ability to defend myself, but I also don't carry while I'm working out. I can't practically conceal a handgun under a t-shirt and gym shorts. They also have a rule against gym bags in the weight room.

Their "policy" may extend to LEO's, but the law (PC 30.06) doesn't, so I guess the worst they could do is cancel their memberships. A lot of "Feds" and local LEO's work out in my location and I suspect they carry into the locker room, though I haven't directly seen it. I think I've also seen them violating the no gym bags in the weight room policy too.
Candidly, I have a hard time being all that upset by Lifetime's policy based strictly on the practicality carrying while exercising. I think it'd be tough (and likely uncomfortable) to carry while doing certain types of exercise at a gym. I'm sure something like a KelTec would work, and I do carry one of those occasionally. Even when I run in my neighborhood, I dislike carrying even the KelTEc. I also don't like the idea of locking "it" up in a locker that the Gym has access to. So to me, carrying to the Gym and leaving it in the car seems like a logical option.

Does it annoy me they have the policy? Sure. Would a lack of that policy change my carry habits? Likely not.

Don't get me wrong, it bothers me that they do have the policy, and I'd rather if they didn't. But even if they didn't have the policy (or signs), I'd not carry there anyway.

It's great that you can make that choice to leave your gun in the car and still utilize the gym and that choice works for you. What's not great is that this company has taken away the right of other members to choose what works for them. Agreeing with a bad policy because you wouldve abided by it anyway is the surest way to slowly lose your freedom. Sooner or later they'll make a bad policy that does negatively affect you.

That looks good but want to check it out in person before I buy. I went to a Houston area 5.11 dealer and they don't carry it (in any of their locations.) :grumble

Anyone know a shop in the Houston area that carries these?

I agree! Moreover our votes (for reasons that are WAY off topic) at the ballot box do not mean much. But that upon which we spend our money is what we vote to exist in the world. . You can probably tell that this is my lil soapbox :???: .

The issue isn't while working out so much... It's the period of time at 0'dark-thirty when you're walking out to your car in a lot that Lifetime doesn't take responsibility of that is frequentef by breakins and such... They've even sent reminders to lock up your stuff.

In any case, I'm not suggesting we grab our Bianchi IWB and Glock 22 and head to treadmill for 3 mile run in less than 20 minutes...

I don't think that's the issue. What a business cares about is making money. It doesn't matter what you think of their policies or what you say about them --if you keep giving them your money you're ultimately endorsing them. You're giving money to people who want to deny you the right to self-defense. At best the people who run this business are ignorant about guns, self-defense, and concealed carry. It's more likely that they're straight up anti-gun and anti self-defense, so rewarding them with your dollars is like giving money to the enemy. Of course, your money is yours to do with as you wish. When it comes to my own time and money I'm a hardliner on this subject. I will not voluntarily trade with any business I know to be anti-gun or anti- carry; and I have no interest in being around people who are anti-gun and anti-self-defense.

I plan on speaking with the General Manager although she wouldn't give me his contact info.
Be careful on this!

I am a frequent Gym user in the Austin area. My gym (not gonna mention name here in case they decide to mimic Lifetime Fitness) has no signs or any kind. I often go at 4 am and WILL NOT go unless I am carrying. I think it may be time for you to switch gyms. Drive around Austin a bit and you will see that a large gym chain has no signage.

A quarter what?

If this was a policy not in force when you began your commitment, I wonder what kind of stink they'd raise if you tried canceling that commitment because they changed the terms of your agreement. I would not be walking out of a gym at night without my weapon on me.

Be very careful of your guns at the fitness clubs. Carry them WITH YOU when you workout. A Kel-Tec P3AT or Ruger LCP in a pocket holster while you work out is fine. I was at my gym, locked my gun in the locker, and went to workout... but I forgot something. I went back and a guy runs out of the locker room when he sees me enter. The door to the locker had it's hinges REMOVED. If I returned a minute later, my gun would've been stolen!!! This was at a very prestigious and expensive Dallas fitness club, too! Lesson learned;

!!! Never part with your gun(s) in public. Always keep them on your person !!! Don't leave them in a locker! Don't leave them in your car! Don't leave them with a security guard at a nightclub! Keep your gun on you at ALL times! Use this website to check out the 30.06 condition of a place BEFORE you go:
http://www.texas3006.com/

I know some of y'all use a cable lock and a metal box to keep your guns in your car. Hint: a pair of bolt cutters will cut that cable lock in 1 second. Keep your gun on you and if a place unexpectedly has a 30.06 sign, just leave and spend your money elsewhere or your gun WILL get stolen. Think about it. If you were a thief, how would you steal guns? Just go and hang out at a place of business that has new 30.06 signs put up. If someone walks up to the door and turns back to leave something in their car, isn't it a dead giveaway that the person is leaving a gun in the car?

Be careful out there....
