Nice enough for you to be willing to help a person who you thought was injured. WHen he ran away from you and you saw two others hiding, it was time to retreat and call 911, be a good witness.

Unless you are a LEO, you had no business putting yourself in that situation.

No offense meant, but I am a former cop with training and experince in handling these situations, and I would have been a witness and not involved.
I was waiting for either you or Baytown to voice your opinion. (you guys are the only LEOs I know of of TCHLF.com)

I will seriously contemplate this and especially Ghentry's comment about the higher responsibility to my family. I'm about to buy life insurance just for this reason.

The problem will be removing the instinctive reactions and becoming more thoughtful. Think before you act...

I want to thank everyone for their opinions. I will continue to think this situation over. I got a cold shudder when I imagined my reaction had one of the kids reached for something, or the drunk brother coming in at full speed to defend his sibling.

That's the stuff nightmares are made of.

I couldn't live with myself if I didn't stop to help a possible injured person.
That said, once he got up and ran, it's time to do the 911 thing and report. It could have gone real bad real fast for you. Now, on a different note, had it been a serious crime (i.e.-kidnapping, assault) in progress, I would have probably intervined after calling 911 to report.
