When to renew CHL and prcoedure question.......

#1

Post by maximus2161 »

Question:

My CHL will expire in April 2015. When am I able to renew it? My understanding is that now CHL renewals are just done online and thats it? I know its probably a bit early for me to renew (I thought it was 6 months before exp) and I went to DPS' site and logged in but I only get options to change info or apply for an intructors lic. No renew option.

I didnt know what the new procedure is now. I dont know if DPS mails something to me or what happens. Can anyone let me know how it works now? Thanks!

DPS will mail you about 6 months before (I got my letter about 2 months ago for a January renewal)

follow the steps on the letter
- go online
- log in
- fill out the form
- it will then say what documents are needed, and in my case, no documents required
- enter credit card number
- submit
- wait for ??? (days/weeks?) for license

Hey thanks for the fast reply. Ok Then I will start keeping an eye out for a letter. Probably too early still for that.

I got a letter from DPS in August to remind me to renew my CHL (about 6 months before the expiration date). Online renewal was simple and painless, it took me about 15 mins to answered a few questions and give them my credit card # to pay for the $72 fee ($70 renewal fee + $2 processing fee). The new license came to my mailbox 15 days after that including the 2 weekends.

Just did mine by snail mail. Received plastic in less than 3 weeks. $25 Veteran.

Actually the "Senior" rate is $35. That's why I changed mine to "Veteran". That and to get Veteran status put on the license.

Received my renewal notice six months before expiration. Went online, filled out the info and cc info. Two weeks later new paperwork arrived.

The last time I renewed 4 years ago, it was online. IIRC, at that time the rules said a CHL holder would have to take a renewal class every other time after that. Is that still in effect, or are we no longer required to take a renewal class at all - just re-apply online?

No renewal classes. No renewal shooting. Go online, pay the fee -- get the license. Easy-peasy.

It has been a few years so howdy everyone.

A Constable friend of mine who is also a CHL instructor told me yesterday that I will have to start the whole process over as if I am a new applicant since my license expired in July. I hold a valid TX Peace Officers license (former Deputy Sheriff) as well as a Level III security license and find it odd but I do not have a problem requalifying. He will requalify me free of charge but is he correct in that I need to start all over again?

July of this year should not be a problem. DPS still allows renewal up to a year after expiration.

The law that removed the requirement for a renewal class was crystal clear that renewal applications must be submitted before the current license expires. That said, DPS is known to be flagrantly ignoring that part of the law so chances are good you can renew without a class. If you want to try, go online and submit the renewal application. https://txapps.texas.gov/txapp/txdps/chl/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Even if you start from scratch, as a Peace Officer, you can avoid the class like so. http://www.dps.texas.gov/RSD/CHL/Licens ... rInstr.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Ahhh, a subject near & dear to my heart! My license expired back on June 28. :oops: I forgot the letter I received from DPS. I found it last Tuesday, and OHHHHH fiddlesticks! Renewed immediately online making the payment & answering the questions last Tuesday (10/14). Next day the charge showed up on my bank statement. We'll see how it goes, and will post results back here.

I am aware of the above rule so thank you. Unemployment was/is the main reason why I could not afford the $70 renewal prior to expiration. My issue is that I am currently not employed with a department thus making my Peace Officer license irrelevant. As mentioned I do not have an issue if I must start over and the class will cost me nothing and give me more range time which I truly enjoy.

Thanks,
Gregg
