Carry while waiting for updates address plastic?

#1

Post by pmcdn »

I recently moved and just went online to change my address and pay the related fee. My printer got hosed up so I couldn't print the receipt.

I am wondering if I'm technically legal to carry with my CHL ID that has my previous address while waiting for the new one. I've searched but couldn't find any info.

Am I legal with the old CHL ID while waiting? I called and asked DPS but the person I spoke with couldn't give me a straight answer.

Per rules you must submit a change of address request within 30 days of moving. After applying for the change you are allowed to carry on your existing license until the new one is received.

Thanks. Right before I saw your reply I asked an HPD. He said same thing and that is pull up right away on his computer.

Good to know and DPS needs to get their info straight IMO.

Yes. She was wishy-washy when I asked so I asked her point blank: Am I violating the law by carrying with my old CHL card after I have made the address change but before i have received the new one? Her answer was its up to the officer who pulls me over.

I kept asking it again but kept getting the same answer. I took it as she didn't know.

The cop told me I'm fine to carry with old as they can very quickly verify. He told me that I am not breaking the law.

Works for me.

When you say SHE, are you talking about a clerk at the CHL office? Many times they are not experts on the law and don't necessarily know all of the answers. However, they should not answer if they don't know for a fact.

Yes, the DPS clerk who took my call.
