General tip - Be prepared for any of a variety of different reactions - in past years we identified as CHL holders carrying, as they required and: Got shuffled aside to wait while a supervisor came to take down our names and CHL and Driver License numbers (which I wrote a letter to the State Fair about and never received a reply, but the following year they stopped doing that) and then turned us over to a LEO who wanted to know why we felt the need to carry there; We have been told to report to a LEO at a stand behind the entrance (several times) (and one year the LEO was busy so we just kept walking, and another there was no LEO at the stand, so . . . kept on walking); We have been waved through; and one time the bright light wielding the wand passed it up my side where my 1911 was OWB under my jacket, and it didn't beep because he wasn't doing it right (I have experience) while the one "inspecting" my wife's purse completely missed the compartment with her PPKS in it, so we didn't bother to identify.

Jim,

Did you CC the DPS' Private Security Bureau? I did and got a rapid response stating that the collection and retention of the personally identifiable information was illegal, that the security (Platinum IIRC) firm was under investigation and that this violation was going on their list of complaints. Also, I allowed it ONE time and after being "lectured" by them about my responsibilities started trying to get their information. I carried a tablet and asked to see their ID stating that I did not know them, how they were securing the information and what their disposal protocols were and that only DPS could legally retain that info and an LEO could only record it as part of an investigation. Predictably an argument would normally start them usually jumping up and down and screaming about their absolute authority (only a slight exaggeration) threatening to prevent my entry unless I provided it. I'd insist on their getting the gate's LEO over and that is where it would typically end.

I have posted it before, but if ya'll would like I can post the letter again. I have no doubt that the letters written from this membership is what turned the situation around. To the OP, I normally will simply buy my ticket and as I approach the "wand" I will simply state, "I need to see the police officer." Most will say okay and wave me on past, some will cock their head like a puppy and ask, "Why?" But after I tell them again I get waved on past.
I did not CC the PSB that first time, but the following year I told them they were not allowed to take that information down and that I would be writing to PSB. That was the time they then told us to go wait for the LEO and the supervisor. No supervisor showed up, I told the LEO that it was illegal for them to take down the information (the only valid reason for recording it is retaining it) and I was going to insist that Dallas PD institute an investigation and arrest those responsible. Of course that year I had gone better prepared and was ready to take names and write to everyone. The LEO looked at our DLs and CHLs and made some comment about "If that's the way you feel about it." and waved us on. As we went up the walkway, 25 yards or so away, the security supervisor was coming down in his golf cart and by the way that he insisted on being given the right of way, I was almost convinced that he knew who we were.

Again, in more recent years the experience has been much less stressful, and last year a "young" lady escorted us around the gates and dropped us at the LEO, who looked at us like we had two heads each, and when we said "CHL" he just waved us on.

Last year I carried on my trip to the fair. I had it on my side. I was wanded and nothing! So I went thru the turnstile. That made me upset that their wanding was useless. So I asked for the supervisor. When the sup came up I showed them my CHL and asked if she knew what that was and what it meant. When she did not I told her it was a license to carry a firearm and asked her if she had any idea what THAT meant. She did not. I told her I was carrying and that her security setup was dangerously useless if their wand didnt pick up my gun. She got real apologetic and said she'd look into it.

Ok....fine.

If they didn't detect my pistol I wonder how many others they missed some of whom might have been bad guys.

That is an excellent point, I've carried out there for years. When they tried to ban guns, the first year a girl got shot in the hind quarters in the middle of the Midway. They tried to say it came from outside the park and somehow missed all the buildings, rides and 10,000 other people to somehow hit her low in the middle of the crowd. Also being privy to the number and nature of runs in the area, going to and getting out are as, if not more dangerous than attending.

They never caught the weapon I was carrying. Once they got a squawk and Ithey asked me what I had in my pockets, I pull out my keys, my wallet with a badge in it and hold them down to my sides. Wouldn't you know they happened to be over my gun and my mag on their respective sides. That was enough metal to satisfy them. The next time I was wearing a belly band AND a Holter monitor trying to figure out where my V-Tach was coming from. That dad blamed thing looked like a bomb strapped to my chest. I lifted my shirt, and they kinda looked dumbstruck and said, "Uh....okay." Other than those two times they missed the weapon totally.

Must have bad food then. They keep out those with discriminating tastes.......
You got that right!
Old Mill Technically on govt. property (Fairgrounds) so PC 30.06 wouldn't apply, which is why the Fair itself can't post 30.06. I wouldn't spend a lot of time worrying about it unless they have metal detectors at their entrance.

Has anyone been to the fair yet this year? Any new policies?

A friend of mine told me that another friend of his told him that a lawyer told him (seriously, lol) that they were going to make CHLs wear an armband so the police could easily identify and know who the CHLs were. I told him I thought that was a bunch of junk and I wouldn't allow that if they tried it with me for soooo many reasons.

I went today- no armband, sash, or tiara required. Simple process. I walked up to the people with the wands and showed my CHL. She didn't even look up, so I brought it to her attention. She said she was new, and I told her I would need to speak to the police officer who was up in a stand about 3 steps away. The lady next to her explained to her that for CHLs she needed to send them to the officer. He looked at it briefly and waved us through.

That's what I figured. I'll tell my friend that his friend's lawyer is an idiot.

I wish. Just about the only reason I have ever gone is to get a look at all the different models of cars in one place and if my daughter wants to go with a friend or two. We have yet to hear that request so far this year.

I've already been to the Fair. I believe it was in the early '60s!

I only want to go so my kids have memories of us doing stuff together. Won't be many of us out of the state cause I worry about the recip laws. When I do go to other states I look up their CC laws but worry about some stupid law that I may have missed.

I have a little more info on what my friend's friend was told. He said it was his CHL instructor and someone from [Pre-paid legal service] that told them in class that this is how it would be done if they went to the fair. :banghead:
