I went online to change my address and it states:

Address Change (Standard Application) $25.00
Texas.gov Price $27.00

So is it $25, $27 OR $52 to change my address?

Like renewing your vehicle registration, there's a convenience fee to do it online and pay with a credit card. Total is $27.

I think that fee is way too high. Tx shouldn't be making a profit on such as this. Yes, cover cost and that is it.

There's no good reason for it to cost more than a Driver License address change and with a pro-gun majority in the legislature it wouldn't.

Perhaps my memory is off, but I seem to remember when I had an address change some 8/10 years ago, it cost $10.00.

Was it ever $10.00 or do I have more screws loose than I thought?

Good question. I changed my address in '98, but it was within 30 days of my CHL expiring. I had a two year license from '96...they issued them to stagger the renewals when CHL first passed. They gave you half off the initial 4 year $70 vs. $140). I recently got a replacement (lost) and it was $12.50 due to Veteran discount. I think the $10 you're thinking of may be for Drivers License... Seem to remember that was the fee when I changed the DL in '98.

The $2.00 fee doesn't go to the state of Texas. The fees for paying online through texas.gov go to a third party administrator that manages the site.

At least citizens get a choice. For many of the fees that state agencies have to pay for permits and other licenses, there is no way around the fee...even if you pay by check or direct bank transfer (which most state agencies do). It's actually written into the law that the fee is recoverable even if the agency doesn't use the service.

This is a "sweetheart deal" for somebody. The system is set up so that whoever runs the site gets revenue regardless of who uses it.
