Cops and CHL holders

In Texas, especially in the more rural areas, CHL holders are more likely viewed as aids to, allies of, law enforcement, contrasted to the urban areas where it is somewhat less likely.

In California, of course, the attitude was more "them against us" anyone with a weapon was viewed as an opponent if not an enemy.

The Chief of Police in most cities in San Diego were enthusiastically opposed to CCW permits and the Sheriff who had the authority to issue them, would rather not, but realized he had to at least issue some or spend time in court, which he is.

There is an interesting sociological study in this.

I have to disagree with that statement. I worked 2 decades in CA and the beat level LEO is not anti gun, expect when it comes to criminals with guns (gangsters, parolees, drug dealers, ect)...I even remember back when I was a police explorer in the early 80's and we stopped a normal guy with a loaded gun> I got my first lesson on educating the person how to legally carry vs arresting him (Kern County).

I knew an Air Force Reservist at Travis AFB in Northern California who was a San Francisco PD "beat cop". One time I asked him what he thought about concealed carry. He said he thought it was fine

because he kind of looked at it that ANYONE might be armed,

and at least when someone had a license to carry, then it bothered him a lot less. Good guy with his head on straight.

Very true statement. When working in SO CAL I have taken guns off so many felons, gangsters and parolees I can't add it up. Glad gun control worked to keep them out of their hands

I agree about the beat level LEO, although I think it probably varies, too, as I've seen beat level LEO who were anti-gun, at least in civilian hands.

Overall, it really depends on where in California you're talking about.

The county I grew up in issues permits, although you have to write up a cause that has to be more than just 'self defense' (although i think that what you write can amount to 'self defense', it just has to be worded as more than just those two words - or, at least, that's the way it was the last time I looked). We used to go out on county land and hike in, find a backstop, shoot a bunch, pick up all our brass and hike out all while open carrying, and it was legal at the time (although the law may have changed since) and the local cops were basically fine and some would even tell you what to watch out for to keep legal.

Another county I lived in for a long time, concealed carry permits were basically a no go unless you donated to the Sheriff's re-election fund (and I believe there were lawsuits over that, and I have no idea if it's the same Sheriff at the moment).

In general, I think the closer to L.A. or San Francisco you are, the more likely it is you'll be in an anti gun area at least politically (although maybe not at the beat cop level). That probably has exceptions too.

Or, a few CHLers may think of themselves as surrogate law enforcement and swagger about with their CHL status as proof of their "greater than the average citizen's" authority. I could see some LEO's having a concern about this...

Or, some LEO's may think CHLers will give in to anger when provoked and go to guns.

Fortunately, these fears have proven to be almost groundless - but not completely, i.e. some people do actually buy CHL badges...

Why and who in their right mind would buy a "CHL badge"? Why would they even make one? "Concealed" doesn't simply mean physically out of sight, but also out of sight IN PRINCIPLE - as in NOT LETTING OTHERS KNOW YOU'RE CARRYING. It's really clear-cut.

The facts don't support any of the fallacies described above. Unfortunately the facts continue to be ignored or totally misrepresented by the people that believe these fairy tales.

That sounds more like some politicians to me.
