Moving from Colorado to Texas

Hi This is my first post. I am a gun enthousiast from Colorado moving to Houston. The 8 - year old daughter of good friends of ours asked me: "Mr V, are you moving to Texas to escape the new Colorado gun laws?" I lauged hard, and eventhough that isnt the (real) reason, I am very happy to move to the glorious State of Texas!!

Ok "Y'all" have probably already figured out where this post is going. I did some research and spoke to a few people so i am going to give out some back ground information and then bullet-point down what i think is how this is all going to go down. I would like to get some responses and insights please and thanks!

- I just recently moved so i currently still have a CO drivers license and a CO CHL
- I carry everyday with these two documents
- I will be registering here in TX soon (this or next week) and apply for a TX Drivers license
- CO does not have non-resident CHL's
- As a result of the above, I assume that my CO CHL will be voided the moment I register as a resident here in TX
- I will at that point a NON-CH Licensee
- I will go through a 10 hour CHL course, apply for my TX CHL and have to wait
- While waiting I can have a loaded gun on me in my house, on my way to my car (concealed), in my car (concealed).. I spoke with a girl at the "Academy counter" at Gander Mountain and she told me that a gun in my car needs to be unloaded, I hope she was wrong ?!?! (comments please)
- There is no way around me being unlicensed for the time it takes between me surrendering my CO residency and getting a TX one and the time I get my TX CHL issued (correct??) (<-- that SUCKS)

Guns in cars do not have to be unloaded. Possible exception for hunting

If your Colorado gun license becomes void when you relinquish your Colorado car license, there is not much Texas can do about that. If your move was a month or two away, you could get a nonresident Texas gun license before you move and simply change your address for $25 after the move.

It sounds like you are pretty spot on for most of your points.

No your gun does not have to be unloaded in the vehicle, however it has to be concealed from plain view.

As far as the residency thing, and I'm not advocating purposefully or knowingly breaking the law, but residency transition is a gray area. I still owned two homes in NM when I moved here and was only leasing short-term, so I don't think it would have been hard to make the case that I hadn't really established residency in TX yet.

I would also consider asking the issuing department in CO, or the Attorney Generals office, if there is an opinion related to validity of an unexpired CO CHL for someone who has moved. Maybe there is a transition period? Maybe CO still recognizes it until it has expired?

edit: Oh, and if you enjoy the weather in Houston, I agree with anygun, that's pretty twisted

And yeah regarding the weather: I lived in northern Alberta for 5 years.. 9 months of winter with temperatures under -40 as often as they go over +90 here in TX gets pretty old pretty fast.. I'll take the heat anytime!

OK here's my Answer. I sent the Sheriff's office an email and they responded promptly:

Colorado only allows for resident permits, so unfortunately, once you obtain a Texas Driver’s License, the Colorado permit will be invalid. There is no grace period- sorry!

Good luck with the move. Please send your permit back when you are done with it (you only need to put a stickie notating that you’ve moved to Texas).

I worked in Edmonton quite a few times. Broke my left leg in 2008 when I slipped on snow covered ice in -20 degF weather. Never been back. Have not missed it at all.

They have that silly 30/30 rule where if it is >30 degC you can't work for more than 30 minutes without a 15 minute break. 30 degC = 85 degF. I told them it is 85 degF in Houston at 7:00 am and we don't take any breaks after 30 minutes outside. Sissies those Canucks are.

I believe so, yes. Unfortunately it won't speed up the licensing office once you've sent in the paperwork, so I wouldn't wait for it to go through if I were you.

Look like it still has a ways to go.. You're right, I'm not waiting on that one. Just need to find 10 hours in the middle of a move.....

The only good thing about the weather here is the winters are mild or more like fall to most. 90s are nothing! When it gets to 105-110 and near 100% humidity (houston)you have to be crazy to love that! Go mow your lawn in that! I just came back from Tennessee and they were complaining about low 90s and. 40% humidity. I wore jeans at night.
Edit: that being said this summer has been mild for most of the south and at least in Houston we have gotten rain this summer!
Anyways carrying loaded in your vehicle is legal.before I got my chl 6 years ago that's how I carried while waiting for my plastic. Personally I think the first class should be about 4-6 hours and all chl holders should be required to score 230 as the minimum and instructors should be able to score 240 or higher but that's just me.

You could look into a non-resident permit Texas honors that is quick and easy, just to tide you over until you have time get the TX CHL. I don't know which that would be, but I am sure someone could point you that direction.

The only possibility i see would be applying for the Utah non resident license. When I took my course in CO the instructor was also licensed for UT and he dropped in a few items that UT requires. This gave me a cert for both CO and UT. I never pursued the UT CHL becuase i didnt see the need. But for the time it would take to get the UT license, I might as well go for the TX license right away. Also, being a law abiding citizen, I need to register myself in TX within 30 (or was it 90?) days of moving.
