New Sept 1 Law: Qualifying with Revolver or Semi-Auto
Hi all,
First post.
I've been looking at the new laws a bit and want to make sure I have it right on the qualifying aspect. It used to be if you qualified with a revolver that was all you could carry concealed. If you qualified with a semi-auto you could concealed carry either one.
My understanding is that as of September 1, 2013 you will now be able to qualify with just a revolver and you would then be able to carry either revolver or semi.
Do I understand that correctly?
I ask because my wife like revolvers mostly and wanted to qualify with one but she does occasionally shoot a semi-auto and keeps an LCP in her car console.
Thanks!

I see it is your first post, so WELCOME!
That is my understanding as well, that as of Sept 1 a person simply qualifies with any handgun of their choice (revolver or semiauto) and then can carry any handgun of their choice (again, revolver or semiauto) under authority of the resulting license.

If only makes sense. If you take your driving test in an automatic, you're not limited to driving an automatic.

True, but.......I dislike it every time I hear someone compare a CHL with a Driver's License. One is a regulated RIGHT the other is a regulated CHOICE and neither should be discussed with the other.Mel wrote:If only makes sense. The Libs love to do this, regularly.

Yes, you are correct. Legislation was passed to allow a CHL holder to carry a revolver or semi-auto, regardless of what was used to qualify. The bill now just needs Perry's signature to be official.

It will be official even without his signature as long as he does not veto it.gthaustex wrote:Yes, you are correct. Legislation was passed to allow a CHL holder to carry a revolver or semi-auto, regardless of what was used to qualify. The bill now just needs Perry's signature to be official.

Thanks!
I have been looking for a link to something that spelled it out without much luck. The KTXS one is pretty specific.
I appreciate. I am sure my wife will wait until September now because she wasn't too hot on sitting in class 10 hours either.
We came down from Kansas and went through class up there five years ago. She qualified with her revolver and the total time classroom/range was about 7 hour including a brief lunch.
She'll like the new setup here I think.

Re: New Sept 1 Law: Qualifying with Revolver or Semi-Auto
Anyone want to venture an educated opinion about those who have a current license with NSA on it. Will they be able to carry an semi auto after Sept 1 without requalifying. I would think so but I wonder if it will be addressed.

It amends Section 46.15(b), Penal Code, to remove the text in red.
(b) Section 46.02 does not apply to a person who:
(6) is carrying a concealed handgun and a valid license issued under Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code, to carry a concealed handgun of the same category as the handgun the person is carrying;
Here's the complete enrolled text of the bill. http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/tlodocs/ ... 03142F.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks, I had not read the entire bill just a couple of summaries. Was not sure how it was worded.

Re: New Sept 1 Law: Qualifying with Revolver or Semi-Auto
Why was the distinction made in the first place?
Re: New Sept 1 Law: Qualifying with Revolver or Semi-Auto
It was required during the original instatement of CHL in 1995 to get it passed. The rule has just never been removed before now.ss1088 wrote:Why was the distinction made in the first place?
