Thank you for the update on Hank Hill's birthplace. As Johnny Carson used to say to Ed McMahon: "I did not know that."

I used to know a gal who was a native of "The Colony" Texas (Denton County, between Lewisville, Plano, and Frisco) and
she was in the US Army, as well as her husband. Their son was born in Virginia while they were stationed there. I believe
she gave birth to him and returned to Weatherford, Texas (Parker County, west of Fort Worth) within a month or two after
he was born. He never left Texas again once he was back.

She always fretted that he was not a native Texan, due to his Virginia birth. :-)

It's on the internet, you know it's gotta be true. :biggrinjester: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hank_Hill" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hank Hill was born as early as 1959 (either in Mid-April or early-September to coincide with one of Fidel Castro's first visits to the U.S.) at Yankee Stadium in The Bronx, New York (at 3:07 am, measuring 19.5 in and weighing 7.5 lbs).[8] According to the episode "Yankee Hankie," Hank proudly believed he was born in Texas to Tillie Mae Hill and Cotton Lyndal Hill but finds (to his disgust) that he was actually born in New York City. His mother told him she gave birth to Hank in the women's restroom at Yankee Stadium during Cotton's failed attempt to assassinate Fidel Castro during a rare American visit.

Moved here from CA when I retired 10 years ago ... while the government in Austin is as blue as SF's, they have no particular power over guns. I live in a small town north of Austin and gun-friendly is the best way to describe it ... Got my CHL the legally required 6 months after arriving and have carried ever since with no problems. As others have suggested, keep out of the three major cities and you should be fine ...

The DFW metroplex is now the fastest growing metro area in the entire US. This means opportunities, but it also means gridlock and road construction in many areas of town. The mid-size towns in Texas are easier to live in.

Welcome to Texas :txflag: BUT please do not move to Austin...we have too many people who have moved here already in the past 3-5 years :grumble

Austin is really just California at this point--well at least everyone I run into now in Austin they are from CA or east coast :mad5 Living in Austin since 1987 I have seen this place boom and not in a good way. BUT, hey it is what it is...so welcome to Texas wherever you end up.

Georgetown is just north of Austin. A lovely area and gun friendly. The DPS training facility is there.

Security is a very big business in the Midland-Odessa area. You have a booming oil economy with lots of oil and service companies that need security services. It is flat, hot, dry, arid, no trees, no lakes but you will love the towns, because you do not have to work hard for a excuse to leave for a long weekend. I have lived in most parts of Texas over the last 38 years, in the oil and gas business. Also we love our guns in Midland-Odessa, no problem with getting a FFl, except for a HOA would rule out a business in a residential area. But, there are several home based FFl's in town. Good luck on your move.

Hi Everyone,

I really appreciate all the fantastic feedback. I can't wait to move to Texas. All your comments have been so helpful. I teach Firearms & Tactics all over the country. Is there a way to get a Texas CHL and become a Texas CHL Instructor in one class or does it have to be done separately? Thanks again.

As bewildering as this may seem to those of us that use our own minds to think, there are many people who simply follow the latest celebrity recommendation or the lame stream media propaganda, it is not as unusual as we would like to believe.

I have spent most of my life around blue collar working class people and many of them are hunters and gun owners. Many years ago the Democrats were believed to be the "working mans" party. Some folks don't realize their party has been taken over by socialists.

Before the socialists took over the party, the democrats were actually not an enemy to the American way of life as they are today. Somewhere along the line, the democrats were taken over by elitist rich snobs who see the working class as subjects needing controlled and cared for like pets.

The democrats have done a better job of pretending to be looking out for minorities and the downtrodden. I say pretending because it is just that, a dog and pony show. The democrats have also done a great job of making it "cool" to vote democrat. After all, if rich gangsta rappers, movie stars and other elitist celebrities say to vote democrat is cool, who are we to say differently?

The Republican Party has managed to get itself painted as the party of old people. The party of the rich. Republicans want to take away your "free cheese". They are the party who wants to get involved in your personal moral choices. It is not "cool" to vote republican.

I wonder at times if some of these folks who proudly proclaim to be democrats these days, would prefer guns be outlawed so they would not be forced to own one for protection. Many are the same crowd who, like good ole joe, claim to be pro gun because they hunt ducks. It is not likely these posters will say the truth on this forum and admit they feel we don't "need" certain types of guns. They are very likely more concerned with the right to free cheese than the RKBA.

That being said, there are still a few old school democrats who are pro second amendment. Not many, but they do exist.

I personally find myself stuck out in the middle somewhere. I absolutely despise the socialist(democrap) philosophy of share the wealth and control the people and I don't particularly agree with the Republican Party platform on moral/social issues. For instance, I couldn't care less about who marries who. I am pro stem cell research. I don't see scientific advances as a threat to religious beliefs.

I voted republican because my main issue is freedom. I am not about government being my "daddy". I vote republican because the Republican Party issues I disagree with are not issues they could ever implement anyway. Nobody is going to outlaw abortion... Ever. That train has left the station. Stem cell research will advance in spite of the few who are apposed to it. The topic of who marries who, bah... Again... That train has left the station. Heck, I'm for legalizing marijauna and treating it like we do alcohol. But again, I am not so concerned with any of these issues that I am willing to give up my basic freedom from government tyranny by voting for a socialist(democrat).

I bet some of the folks voting democrat are just the opposite. They may be more concerned with republicans taking away moral decision making rights and government free cheese than they are with democrats being able to take away our RKBA.

I moved for Scotland, UK to Washington DC and finally to the great state of Texas! Austin to be exact, love the city and it it great to mess with people here. Also get into the capitol building a whole lot quicker with a CHL! First things I bought in Texas, in this order:

- a pickup!
- a dog!
- a gun!
- cowboy boots!
- another gun
- another gun
- another gun
- romantic dinner for wife
- another gun
- dog food, he was getting hungry!

I am very libertarian with my views, I don't care what you want to do. Providing it does not affect me and I don't pay for it. Unusual for a Brit as we tend to pre deposed to socialism!

I have been to many cities around the world and Austin is still the best I have ever been in.

You will not regret the move.

Jim Jones proved people are more receptive to poison than change. There are so many reasons to do the right thing that a belief in a deity does not have to one of them. I believe pologamy should be legal too. I don't really believe in welfare however I know history and without a safety net a Hitler or Mao or Pol Pot will galvanize the lower rungs of society. Republicans are dying out and taking their intolerance with them. Texas swing state by 2020 at the latest as demographics are in place already. Democratic machine not yet funded or focused here yet. I love my guns, my state and enjoy watching Sean Hannity and Rush as political oddities of a regional party destined for the same history as the whigs.

Now my diatribe is over let's keep our focus on guns and our right to keep them. The other point is mute. Republican ideology is regional and disappearing. It's not nice to speak bad of the ill and dying. :rules:
