Carry on TRE (Trinity Railway Express?

#1

Post by woofe »

I occasionally travel between Dallas and Ft Worth via the TRE. I have seen no 30.06 sign on or around the train, but was told that concealed carry by a licensed individual is prohibited.............
Does anyone have any information on this issue??

TRE is a joint venture between the Fort Worth Transportation Agency (FWTA) and Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART). These are both state government funded ventures, so 30.06 would not be valid. I have heard people say that you can't carry on 'the train' because it is riding 'federal railway' facilities and the rails are federal property. I don't believe that is the case and would not hold water. If that was true we couldn't carry in our cars on the Federal Interstate.

I heard the rumor second hand..............so I called the TRE. Got the "receptionist" who, of course, said with great authority that only uniformed police could carry on any TRE property.
Needless to say my bull detector immediately went off (sans the 30.06 sign). I have talked with several CHL instructors who didn't know either.

Under state law, passengers who board METRO's buses or trains can carry a concealed weapon if they hold a license to carry a concealed weapon.
Here's a story about someone not intending to responsibly protect themself and asking govt to "do something"

Related to that last article, sounds JUST LIKE SCHOOL KIDS (and some professors) arguments against campus carry So, when they pull that argument on Campus Carry, point to the buses and trains and lack of that occurring.
Mixed feelings
Some riders waiting at stops along the light rail line Wednesday expressed concerns about the change.

"I have seen arguments on buses, and this means that someone could be in the position to pull out their gun," said Terry Mulhern, 50, a frequent rider on the rail. "It could get very dangerous."

You have heard from two CHL instructors here, Keith and myself, and we both are telling you that you can carry there. The receptionist does not have the authority to give 30.06 notice, and it would not hold water anyways, as it is government owned property.

And, personally, I would not even think about riding DART or TRE unarmed.

In my day job, I'm the media relations director for Dallas Area Rapid Transit, which as pointed out above co-owns the Trinity Railway Express. CHL holders may carry concealed on DART and TRE vehicles. Thanks for the opportunity to explain. Morgan Lyons

Yeah, thanks, Morgan, and welcome. Are you allowed to carry at work?

If TRE or DART are railroads that subscribe to the General Code of Operating Rules for Railroads, then under GCOR 1.12 Weapons, it is unlikely that as an employee of the railroad Mr. Morgan can carry.
Not all railroads subscribe to the GCOR, but most do. Or they could have a General Order that modifies the rules to allow it. He most likely can leave it in his vehicle however.
