I think that he was trying to point out that ADD/ADHD is often times diagnosed to kids who are just, I dunno, starved for attention from parents who believe Barney and Dora should be raising their children, cause Mom needs a vailium.
it's an epidemic in this country that if you have the slightest symptom, you have a disease, and guess what, there's a pill JUST FOR YOU!!!! (imagine that!?!)
least that's my take...

I agree that it is sometimes mis-diagnosed, along with other mental illnesses. As alluded to in an earlier post, have three mental professionals examine the same individual, you just might come up with three different, and coflicting, diagnoses. A lot depends upon their prediliction and pre-disposition. I do not want any mental professional diagnosing me as a danger to myself or others merely on the basis that I enjoy guns and shooting and, having had some professional relationships with some, I can see that happening. Shop around enough and you can find one that will say whatever you want him/her to say.

I think pbandjelly got it correct. But mainly DMG, can you tell me what other industrialized countries and developing countries has this issue of ADD on such a wide scale basis? Also, do you think it has anything to do with the prominence of pharmaceuticals industry in America society. the quick cure pill. Whereas, many other countries uses alternative remedies more often than in US. Try asking a foreigner for a remedy for an ailment and hear the different responses, thenDMG wrote:I agree that it is sometimes mis-diagnosed,
try it with a citizen. you will notice most citizens under 30yo only knows what is on the shelf.
If you don't stand for something, then you will fall for anything.

Yep!
The VT Killer was so obviously a danger that kids dropped classes to avoid him and teachers were scared to be alone with him. "The System" failed to protect him and others. Now, based on that one case, current & future gun owners are expected to put their constitutional rights at risk with a mental health database that can easily be abused.
Maybe the problem that needs to be 'fixed' are the new HIPA regulations that didn't allow the university or medical professionals to notify Cho's parents that "he might have a problem". As far as I can tell, the first notice they received was AFTER the killings.
Anti-gun folks have jumped on this mental database as the latest trick to take away our second amendment rights.
Pro-Rights folks are falling for it.
As Scotty said in Star Trek:
Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.
We are way past twice.
(My current estimate is 19,999)
When it comes to new anti-rights laws, we should stick with the principle:
"Never Give an Inch"
See you at the range

you know what? I am going to agree 100% with that.tomneal wrote:Maybe the problem that needs to be 'fixed' are the new HIPA regulations that didn't allow the university or medical professionals to notify Cho's parents that "he might have a problem". HIPAA (Health Information Portability and Accountability Act) has some GREAT intentions, but as we all know, the road to _____ is paved with good intentions!
I agree with you 100% tomneal and pbandjelly. In two posts you've managed to say what I've been trying to say in numerous posts. You both nailed it so I don't think I should offer anything else to say on the subject.
