Laser on weapon during CHL proficiency testing?

#1

Post by rfs2005 »

Title pretty much says it all. I'll be taking my CHL course this weekend, and I plan to use my Glock 22. I do have a Crimson Trace laser grip installed on it. Will I be allowed to use this during the course? Is that up to the instructor or is it up to the DPS? I don't mind removing it, but I just got it sighted just right, and don't want to have to do it again if I don't have to.

I can't cite it, but I don't think it is allowed. I'm not familiar with that laser. Can you disable it or not activate it? If not, then you may have to remove it for testing. I have one that I could have mounted on the rail and asked, but was told it was not allowed.

One of the instructors should be here shortly.

I would not let you use it. But, others may have other opinions. I don't recall anything specifically prohibiting it.

You should be able to just turn it off instead of removing the grips.

Thanks, y'all. The grip is activated by a pressure switch between the thumb and index finger. There is no on/off switch. I will see if I can remove the battery without removing the grip. If I have to remove it after all, its not a big deal. Sighting it in again just means I have another excuse the spend time/money at the range. :woohoo :txflag:

Same as the above. No sight inhancers on my range.

I have one on the gun I used for my test. The instructor said there is no rule or law against using it but he would prefer I didn't. Since it was a CT Laserguard and I didn't want to remove it, we just put a piece of electrical tape loosely over the front. He was happy and my score was still almost perfect.

I have never had a student try to use a laser but I can't recall a specific rule against it. Just put one of those small dots off a Brichwood Casey target over the laser port, or like suggested, put a little piece of tape over it.

So it looks like several people won't allow it. These same folks also admit they know of no rule prohibiting it. What gives?
If there's no rule against it, first, why wouldn't you allow it, and second, by what authority are you not allowing it?

Don't know about the rules but at my last refresher a guy was using one.

I carry a revolver, but borrowed a gun to qualify so my license would not be restricted. It had a laser, activated much like what you describe. I covered with a piece of electrical tape. Worked fine. (And I shoot better without anyway).

Ease up guys. If there is no statutory prohibition, what difference does it make whether it's a post and notch, three dot, fiber optic aftermarket front sight, optical, or laser sight. Why would instructors assume the power to define additional arbitrary rules other than those required for safety.

Administrative rule 6.73 prohibits optical enhancers during the proficiency test. So it is not an arbitrary decision by instructors.
And I suggest just a piece of tape over your laser.
