Gun dropped in Target - Galveston - and BANG
I was told that a man dropped a gun in the Target store in Galveston, and went off.. :fired
This occurred, Wednesday Jan 11. 2012
The story goes, the man had a holster but did not have it secured to his belt, ( figured in the wast belt) and the gun fell out of the unsure holster, we off and up toward the ceiling, he ran, cops found him, took his CHL, cited him (did not take a ride) he was in the mid 20's..And was told he has a court date..
...
I searched, every where and I could not find the story any where...
Let me if you can find anything on this..

Not sure why folks couldn't find it, this is what I entered for search terms, "galveston gun discharge store" and it was the first result.
I don't fear guns; I fear voters and politicians that fear guns.
Re: Gun dropped in Target - Galveston - and BANG
The problem I see, with him running out, some other CHL, might think BG and shoot him..
Not a smart move..
I wonder, how we can find his court date, I would like to see what the judge finds him, and accident, or neglected...
A question, the police took his CHL, so do they report that to Austin, and is it suspended ??

Re: Gun dropped in Target - Galveston - and BANG
Sad thing is there are lessons that could be learned.
What gun is it that went off when dropped? This shouldn't be able to happen.
The LCP was recalled because of this possibility. Are there other little guns that have this 'flaw'?
What kind of holster was it? How did it fall out? My guess it that it was a pocket holster and that it fell out while digging for change. Or was it another type that just fell out?

There was a similar incident with a .380 in DFW a few years back that involved an elderly gentleman in a church. The "story" was that the gun discharged when it hit the floor. IIRC, subsequent investigation revealed the bullet entered through the top of his foot. I noticed the article about the Target Store discharge said "no property damage". But we all know - unless he was carrying blanks - that bullet had to hit something.

I was told it hit the ceiling, did not go through...

Re: Gun dropped in Target - Galveston - and BANG
Back in my ER days, we had a patient who shot himself in the butt that way. He was at the Handlebar Saloon in Pasadena California and had a small caliber (.25 or .32 if I recall correctly) mouse gun in his back pocket, while quaffing great draughts of proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy..............and said pocket had a hole in it. His pea-shooter dropped out the hole and hit the floor muzzle up. The entrance wound was on the underside of his right buttock, and the exit wound was on the top of the same buttock. A regular Forest Gump he was, and a real pain in the ..... uh, posterior.
He had the right to remain silent, but he did not have the ability. At first he tried to tell Pasadena's finest that someone else had shot him in an altercation. However, his account did not jibe on several key points with statements given by multiple eyewitnesses: namely that they had seen the gun fall out of his pocket; seen the gun hit the floor; seen and heard the gun go off (over the sound of the juke-box playing Kansas' "Carry On Wayward Son" at about 150 Db), seen the bullet strike him in the tushie; and seen the vic grab his posterior with both hands and bellow a mighty oath. He finally admitted that he had brought the gun to the bar and accidentally shot himself with it. Two bandaids and a shot of penicillin later, he was arrested and taken away.

Re: Gun dropped in Target - Galveston - and BANG
How does a gun go off that lands muzzle up?
Most incidents that I have heard of happen when the gun lands on the barrel, and the foward inertia of the firing pin strikes the primer. Therefore shooting into the ground. A gun falling and hitting the ground causing it to shoot into the ceiling sounds unlikely. Maybe a hammer is involved? I'm not an expert but most of the .380s that come with hammers are made by manufactures with a big reputation for safety, and have blocks that interfere with pin until the trigger is pulled.
I would not want a gun that can go off by itself if dropped from the waist to the ground. While most of us don't plan on dropping any guns, There are situations where a gun holder could drop fall or crash. The incident that TAM describes doesn't bother me so much, as I can assume the gun was just a cheap piece of junk, but the incident in Galveston leaves me wondering if there aren't some CHLers carrying something that may be more dangerous to themselves than than they are aware. Perhaps it was a "catch the freefall" incident. It would be nice to know though.

You're absolutely correct. A lot of guns would not go off if they landed muzzle up. This one did. I never saw the actual pistol, so I couldn't tell you what it was, and it might have been hammer fired.....and it very probably was a piece of junk. Certainly the guy who had it was not a discriminating individual.Liberty wrote:How does a gun go off that lands muzzle up?
