Women friendly instructor in Austin?

#1

Post by atxtj »

Well, the wife is pondering the idea of finally getting her chl, but holds a lot of trepidation about taking the class. After my experience in the class, there's no way in hades that I'd send her to the instructor I had. So I'm looking for a laid back, by the numbers kind of instructor that won't belittle or talk down to the students, or tell old cop stories and beat their chest a bunch. She's a little timid about the whole thing and I'd hate for her to get 20 minutes into a class and think she was making a mistake. Any ladies in or around Austin have any suggestions? :bigear:

Michael Cargill of Central Texas Gun Works out in Austin did my CHL course here in Lubbock for my college. It was great. He was a nice guy, didn't try to talk down to anyone or anything, and made the class pretty enjoyable as well.

Granted, I'm not a woman, but there were plenty of women in my CHL class and no one seemed to be displeased.

Look up Julianna Crowder at The Women's Safety Academy - http://www.womenssafetyacademytexas.com/.

I think your wife will be happy with her.

I highly recommend Julianna as well. My wife is an active member with her Leander Girl and a Gun Club and we both did our CHL class with Julianna. We had a great a great experience.

+1 for Julianna Crowder.

She is also the co-founder of A Girl and a Gun ( http://www.agirlandagunclub.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ), which is a great support group for women. They shoot and compete locally as a group.

Off topic a bit but just to comment - The A Girl and A Gun group is awesome! There are chapters all over the state and it's growing everyday. I'm the chapter facilitator for Houston. A Girl and A Gun is a great way for women to become proficient before they take their CHL and a fun way to maintain that proficiency after they get their CHL.

wow! After looking at her website I wish she was in North Texas. I know that I can't recommend the instructor I had to any of my friends, and for sure wouldn't want my d-i-l's or granddaughters in his class.

I wish I could convince my daughter to teach up there. She's friendly, patient, and an LEO. Alas...she's up to her neck getting her graduate degree now, so no dice.

:iagree: Another vote for Julianna Crowder. I took my CHL course with her and her husband John. Both awesome people and even better instructors. http://www.caps-chl.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

I'm 60 miles north of Dallas. I'm going to talk to the owner of the range tomorrow and let him know about the class. I was the only female in the afternoon portion-and at one point he really went off on a tangent that had nothing to do with CHL. But then he started using profanity that was totally uncalled for. Now, I know, shooting is still primarily a "man's world"--and I've been in "man's world" environments all my life,so I let it slide most of the time unless it gets really bad---this did and there was no excuse for it. I was in the Navy stationed on a Marine Corp base--so----

I'm considering taking the instructors course myself--I know I could do a better job(not brag-fact) I've taught everything from parlimentary proceedure to childbirth, so that should fit in there somewhere! I'm also a DTM with Toastmasters
