CHL at the Doctors office.
So I recently took the CHL class and submitted all the paper work. I don 't have my CHL as of yet but have read up on the laws and have a firearm and holster. I plan on carrying a Glock 22 in a Crossbreed Supertuck at 4' o'clock. I have also been preparing myself for EDC by looking out for 30.06 signs and maintaining situational awareness. Today I had a follow up job interview ( I got the job!) After the interview I was sent to a clinic for a pre-employment drug screening. I didn't see a 30.06 sign when I walked into the doctors office. Once I was called back for my test the nurse(male) asked me to empty my pockets into a tray, go into the bathroom and fill up the cup. At this point it struck me. What would I do if I was carrying? I decided in my head that since it would have been on my iwb holster if carrying that I wouldn't have said or done anything with the firearm.
Here's where it becomes interesting. After I completed the urine test he said they also needed hair. The hair on my head was too short, and he said "I'll have to take underarm hair, please remove your shirt." I didn't feel violated or anything, I just realized that if I had my CHL I would have been carrying and this would have outed me.
If I was carrying I would have told the drug screener " I have a CHL and I am carrying a firearm in my belt. How would you like to proceed?"
I figure not saying something and removing my shirt to reveal a pistol may have scared him.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? What would y'all have done?

Never been in that situation, but I don't carry to the doctor for that reason.
Most medical places I've been are posted correctly, but even if they aren't, it is just too volatile a situation with the wardrobe, etc.
Even the scale! I don't need the extra ounces that even my Glock would give me on there. :)

Re: CHL at the Doctors office.
Sadly, the building in which my doctor's located is posted 30.06; but the lab where the blood draws are done is not.
I was wearing a shoulder holster under a sport coat when I went for a blood draw. In the exam room, before I took off my coat, I asked the tech if we could close the door. She shot me a sideways look and asked, 'why? you going to scream or something?'. I shrugged, and took off my coat by way of explanation. She thought that was no big deal at all, asked me what agency I work for. I explained I didn't work for anybody, just a civilian. It was no big deal at all; we had a nice chat about guns, shooting, and CHLs.
YMMV.

I'll quit carrying a gun when they make murder and armed robbery illegal

Re: CHL at the Doctors office.
Not long after I received my CHL. I went to family doctor with no 30.06 so I carried away. I was just there to get checked out so he could prescribe me a Z pack to kick a bad cold. Everything went fine. I almost forgot about it until he lifted the back of my shirt to listen to my lungs. I just kept quite to see what he said. He didn't skip a beat, he just continued like normal without saying a word… I got the prescription and on the way to the pharmacy I went.

He said the hair needed to be at least 1 1/2". Leg was an option but it's not long enough on me. Underarm is all I got that's that long and just barely. I get my hair cut every 2-3 weeks. I wouldn't have gone through this for a minimum wage job.papajohn1964 wrote:The hair on my head was too short, and he said "I'll have to take underarm hair, please remove your shirt."

Did you happen to notice any rings on this male nurse - ear or finger?smtimelevi wrote:He said the hair needed to be at least 1 1/2". Leg was an option but it's not long enough on me. If you were carrying at 4 o'clock it would not be in your pocket.... soooo you wouldn't have to empty it. I have carried at several MD appointments, I roll everything in my clothing or put it in my purse - yes I realize you guys don't have this option typically. Purse is easier, as they don't look at you like you are oober crazy when you refuse to leave your purse behind as when you grab your clothing bundle to run to the lab in your little drafty gown

Re: CHL at the Doctors office.
That's why I don't carry to the Dr. Never know what's gonna happen. Might have a pleasant experience, or might have a nurse go running down the hall screaming "He's got a gun!!!" whether posted or not. Actually, this is one place I have carried off the body in a backpack. And I have always thought that was an unfair thing that ladies have an advantage on. No matter what you carry with you in the less desirable mode of off-body carry, a woman never gets asked, "Why are you taking your purse to the bathroom/coke machine/conf room?" A guy definitely gets attention if he carries his backpack, computer bag, or other to the bathroom with him!
But before everyone jumps on, I prefer on-body carry, but do fall back to off-body in certain situations like the Dr. Well, really for the urgi-care kind of places, especially off hours. At the doctor's office during the day, I am likely to just not carry. Too many ways it can go wrong.

That wasn't the issue. I had to take off my shirt for body hair removal. Firearm would have been visible.
If they just asked for me to empty my pockets I wouldn't have done anything but that.

About to become the primary provider at a new urgent care clinic in my area. If someone wants to come in with a concealed weapon, God bless them! You won't find a 30.06 sign anywhere around the place.
