I feel very de-escalated...ghentry wrote:Jason, is that a threat?you live in Katy Huh? you ever want to have lunch some time?
If that's the case, I'll be forced to use some of my de-escalation techniques I learned at Pruett's CHL class:
Both hands in front of me, palms toward you.
"Hey man, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you"
"I shouldn't have said that"
"I don't want any trouble"
"I'm going to just leave"
I slowly back away from the keyboard and turn off my monitor.

Man, am I glad I missed all the fracuss lately...
But, I would consider doing my next renewal at Jim Pruett's shop...
I have heard good things about the class...It is a little more expansive, but you get what you pay for...An all-inclusive class...All I have to do is get it in the mail afterwards...
If the exposure (radio celebrity status) causes one to hesitate taking the class because you think its all going to be a show or something...Look at how many take the class, and how long its been operating...
I just know its not "him" but his son conducting the class...And not that I don't think Jim (Dad) is incapable of relating some good knowledge about firearms himself...
If there was a problem... Then I think their class would have been short lived...
Its either this class, or one I can get done over at PSC...If I can slip in as a non-member...I got time and patience to see that through...

If your buddy lives in Humble & doesn't like the Sportsman's Outlet, there is another range fairly close. It's called 59 Gun range. The guy over there is named Lee. He is a good guy, very personable & friendly. The address is 11325 Eastex Frwy, & the phone number is 281-449-6064. It's about 10 minutes south of FM 1960. Good luck.
By the way, Rooster is also a friend of mine. He's a good guy, passionate & knowledgeable about shooting & safety. I believe things could have been handled differently, via PM or email, as Mr. Cotton has suggested. I hope that Jason will have the opportunity to return to the forum, as I believe his knowledge and experience will contribute. Thanks.

There are plenty of CHL courses in the San Antonio area - just over 60 miles from you. One that I like and is the least expensive is at the Bullet Hole Range, not far from 1604 and FM 1957. Class is taught by Vern. Good instructor. About $70. others are also good, but almost twice the price.
Be safe and have a wonderful week.

I have known Jason for a while now and I have never known him to deliberately threaten someone. He is spirited in his discussions, but generally provides positive and helpful information.
I think that Jason could have handled himself on this thread a little better, only because you don't know him and how he comes across.
I agree that he did not follow the rules regarding the language, and that is his fault. He also should not have made a post that could have been interpreted as a threat. I think that he'll take that as lesson learned and I hope that he will be allowed back in the future as long as he is willing to follow the rules and the members here will be open to his ideas.

I too know Jason pretty well. I agree that the man is passionate about training and safety. He is also one that enjoys a good heated debate. I wholeheartedly doubt that his invitation to have lunch was a threat. I believe he wanted to continue the debate without being bound by the restraints of a keyboard.
It seems to me that things got a little out of hand.
I took my CHL course at Sportsman's Outlet, and I was pleased. I have since been back there a few times just to use the range, and I'm thankful that the owner of place was not teaching the course. Encourage your friend not to let the man running the place shy him away from the course taught there. The instructor was very professional and very pleasant....the owner is not.

Okay guys, I’m going to remove the ban on Rooster and give this another try. But I want to explain the reason for my response.
The last things I want to do is delete someone’s post, or ban them from TexasCHLforum. This board was launched because tx.guns had gotten to the point that honest discussions quickly turned into nothing more than personal attacks, often laced with profanity. When I posted a query as to whether there was any interest in me creating a CHL forum, I was surprised at the number of emails I received. A common theme in those emails was the reluctance of many people to post questions, comments or opinions for fear that they would be attacked. So, I agreed to create Texas CHLforum and set about learning what was involved in setting up and running a bulletin board.
In last few months, I’ve received several PM’s and emails from TexasCHLforum “members expressing their gratitude for having a forum where they can post their opinions, comments and questions without being ridiculed. I too have posted my appreciation to you the members on more than one occasion. A forum or newsgroup doesn’t go from a friendly and productive atmosphere to one of dissension and hostility over night, anymore than we lose or regain our Constitutional rights over night. Rather, they slowly decay amid growing insults and personal attacks. The only way I know to prevent the decline of TexasCHLforum is simply not to let the slide begin. Thankfully, you folks have done my job by not letting it happen.
Finally, I am very serious about getting more women and young people involved in TexasCHLforum. While I’d rather not read off-color language in posts, for the most part, I’m not personally offended by language I see on other forums, so long as it’s not part of a personal attack. However, many women are quickly turned off by foul language and will avoid what can be an excellent resource. (Also, parents will not refer their kids to a web site that allows or tolerates vulgar language.) The members represent a wealth of training, experience and expertise that can be invaluable to the ladies, but we have to make them feel welcome. Many of the members know me personally, many do not. Among those that know me, relatively few know why getting more women involved is more than a goal for me, it’s a quest. So, if we guys have to refrain from using some of the more colorful language we’d use over beer and burgers, then so be it. It’s for a good cause. (We can use the more descriptive language when we meet at the range and swap lies about our shooting prowess!)
I hope this helps to explain the goals for TexasCHLforum and why I believe we have to operate by a bit tighter standard.
In hindsight, I probably should have tried to use a PM rather than ban Rooster. As unpleasant as this has been, perhaps some good can come of it. I’m deleting my prior post, as I don’t want it to be part of the “permanent record of TexasCHLforum. (Wow, that really sounds like a lawyer!)
Regards,
Chas.
